Tre Johnson became the 10th NBA Lottery pick from the University of Texas in NBA Draft history, joining an elite crew of former Longhorns including Kevin Durant, Tristan Thompson and Mo Bamba among others. Johnson, who is originally from Garland, TX, and played a lone season on the 40 Acres, was selected by the Washington Wizards with the 6th overall pick.
Johnson had an outstanding 2024-25 season, playing and starting in 33 of Texas’ 35 games. He led the SEC in scoring with an average of 19.9 points per game, shooting 42.7% from the field (224-525), 39.7% from three-point range (89-224), and 87.1% from the free throw line (121-139). Johnson also led the team in minutes played (34.7 per game), ranked second in assists (90, 2.7 per game), and tied for second in steals (31). He scored in double figures in 31 of his 33 games, surpassed the 20-point mark 15 times, and exceeded 30 points on three occasions.
Johnson became just the sixth freshman to lead the SEC in scoring since the 1932-33 season, joining the ranks of Jim Nolan (Georgia Tech, 1946), Bernard King (Tennessee, 1975), Chris Jackson (LSU, 1989), Cameron Thomas (LSU, 2021), and Brandon Miller (Alabama, 2023). His 19.9 points per game was the highest scoring average by a Texas player since J’Covan Brown led the Big 12 with 20.1 points per game in the 2011-12 season.
Johnson earned several accolades, including SEC Freshman of the Year, spots on the All-SEC Second Team and the All-SEC Freshman Team as selected by the league’s coaches. Media covering the league named him SEC Newcomer of the Year and placed him on the All-SEC First Team. He was one of five finalists for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award and was a five-time SEC Freshman of the Week (Nov. 11, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 17, and Mar. 3). Additionally, he earned a spot on the NABC All-Gulf District First Team.
