Texas Longhorns quarterback David Ash has been cleared by the Texas training staff to resume football activities, the school announced on Saturday.

Ash is expected to petition the NCAA for a medical redshirt, after playing in only 3 games last season.  The junior quarterback suffered concussion-like symptoms after an injury sustained in the BYU game but returned to the field against Kansas State two games later.  Ash’s symptoms reappeared while playing against the Wildcats and continued to linger, causing him to miss playing time in all subsequent games.  Senior Case McCoy handled backup duties in Ash’s absence, leading Texas to a 6-3 record in 9 games as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns.

New head coach Charlie Strong is assessing his quarterback situation closely but if David Ash is able to return to form, you have to think he has a better than average chance at retaining the starting job at quarterback heading into the 2014 season.  Sophmore Tyrone Swoopes is expected to compete against Ash, with dual-threat and 4-star Texas commit Jerrod Heard (Denton Guyer) rolling into Austin this summer.
