“Better Never Rests:” Key Takeaways from Sarkisian’s 9/12 Press Conference

Texas Football Head Coach Steve Sarkisian’s press conference on September 12th was full of memorable quotes that described his team and their game against Alabama on the 10th. The most impactful one, though, may just be the phrase that was used more than once: “Better never rests.” Sarkisian emphasized throughout the entirety of the presser that they must continue to improve “individually… and collectively on each side of the ball and on special teams”. This improvement may be tough to accomplish as Texas lost their starting QB Quinn Ewers to an upper body injury that is expected to sideline him for 4-6 weeks, along with other injuries to players such as QB Hudson Card and DB D’Shawn Jamison. Sarkisian was asked about these players statuses and responded by stating “they are day-to-day”.

Towards the middle of the presser, Sarkisian addressed the outside voices from around the college football world after their loss to Alabama stating “to quote my old boss, we got to be careful of the rat poison”. He emphasized the importance of quieting the noise outside of the building and “focusing on us and our preparation”. He also touched on how special the atmosphere was on Saturday at Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium and said the team felt like they “were one with our fans”.

The Longhorns’ next game will be a 7 P.M. kickoff against UTSA in Austin on September 17th. Will this game show, even though the ‘Horns are a little banged up, that better really does never rest?
