After only scoring a single run in the series’ first game, Texas was again limited by Nebraska in Game 2. After 14 scoreless frames, the Longhorns succumbed to the Huskers 1-0 in 15 innings. The win gave Nebraska a series victory, and puts pressure on Texas to salvage the trip to Lincoln with a win on Sunday.
Texas batters only managed four hits and three walks on the day, but Longhorn pitchers were able to hold Nebraska at bay. However, Husker starter Kyle Kubat turned in a sterling effort, hurling eight innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball while striking out nine Longhorns.
Kasey Clemens started for the Horns and had his best outing of the season. Clemens frustrated Nebraska with a solid mix of three pitches, limiting the Huskers to just two hits and one walk in seven innings of work. Clemens appeared to get a cramp in his hand in the eighth frame, and Skip Johnson immediately went to the bullpen for Kirby Bellow, who continued Clemens’ trend and held Nebraska scoreless.
The Horns eventually used five more pitchers in addition to Clemens and Bellow – the bullpen combined to scatter six hits over 7.1 innings, only allowing the game winning run in the bottom of the 15th frame. The Nebraska bullpen was even better, striking out 10 Texas batters while only allowing one hit in 7 innings.
Five Longhorns struck out more than once and Ben Johnson was the only Texas player with multiple hits. Travis Duke fell to 1-1 on the season, taking the loss when Austin Darby singled home the winning run.
