Last weekend, I covered a team that I have never covered before (an impressive feat in and of itself) – the Austin Regents Knights. For the final week of the Texas high school football regular season, I ventured southwest to check out 2026 quarterback Quinn Murphy, who already boasts 9 scholarship offers (including one from Michigan) as just a sophomore.
Despite of a slow start to the game for both Regents and St. Michael’s, Murphy found his groove early in the second half with a pair of touchdown strikes to 6’7″ wide receiver Hudson Powell. Friday’s matchup represented somewhat of a trap for Regents, with St. Michael’s (who, entering the game possessed a 3-6 overall record) being their final opponent before the beginning of the playoffs. However, Murphy weathered out a first half in which he threw an interception and looked sharp from there on out.
The Regents gunslinger stands in a shade under 6’2″, already possessing a world of experience having started for the Knights in both his freshman and sophomore year seasons. In fact, through 21 career games, Murphy has already thrown a staggering 75 touchdown passes to 9 interceptions, along with 4,721 passing yards. In a year in which the Central Texas recruiting scene is relatively ‘dry’, for lack of a better word, Murphy may be Austin’s crown jewel.
Ultimately, led by Murphy’s pair of touchdown passes, Regents turned on auto pilot in the second half in a 31-0 win over St. Michael’s.
Extra Point:
With the TAPPS playoffs starting for Regents tonight, we will have to stay tuned as to whether Murphy can lead the Knights to their seventh championship later on down the road. I am also crossing my fingers that I am able to see the sophomore quarterback once again this season, and am curious to see how his recruitment progresses.
The Baylor Bears were the most recent school to offer Murphy in September, however the Longhorns are also aware of his talents – as Murphy accepted an invite to the BYU game a few weeks ago. Currently, USC commit Julian Lewis is the only sophomore at the quarterback position to have received an offer from the Longhorns. However, while Steve Sarkisian’s staff has proven to be selective in terms of extending offers at the quarterback position, you can expect this number to slowly increase once we get to the spring
