On Friday, former Iowa State Cyclones guard, Tyrese Hunter, announced that he will be transferring to the University of Texas at Austin, joining a Longhorns basketball program that will soon be in its second season under head coach Chris Beard.

Last season, Hunter was named the Big 12 Conference’s Freshman of the Year after an impressive freshman campaign in which he averaged 11 points, 4.9 assists and 2 steals per game. Next season, he will be joining former-transfers Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr, who were able to lead the Longhorns past the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.

While proving to have an aptitude for creating opportunities for teammates offensively, as well as having active hands on defense, the former four-star basketball prospect will need to improve his efficiency on offense for the Longhorns to make a deep playoff run. As a freshman, Hunter shot 68.7% from the free throw line and 27.4% from beyond the arc for the Cyclones. In Chris Beard’s first season as the head coach of the Longhorns, the team struggled from three-point range, having the 228th-best three-point field goal percentage in the country at a miserly 33.04%.

Despite of the offensive inefficiencies in his first collegiate season, Hunter will be expected to be a big contributor for the Longhorns in their first season at the new Moody Center.
