Throughout the course of the day we learned a lot.  We learned Mack Brown might be in a bit of a mid-coaching crisis which manifested itself in the form of deviation from conventional Texas recruiting strategies.  How big of a deviation?  Let’s just say a missed left turn in Tijuana kind of deviation.  Only not as bad.   A handful of hours after Lorenzo Joe became the first commit of the 2014 class, Texas received another commitment from San Antonio Brennan High School defensive end Derick Roberson.  As a sophmore, the 6’3″, 215lb Roberson made 1st Team All-Area San Antonio and 1st Team All-District 28-4A.  While the recruiting rankings for the 2014 players is still raw, it is easy to say that Roberson is a state top-10 player.

In an unprecedented recruiting paradigm for the Longhorns in which they picked up two soon-to -be high school juniors, the floodgates may have just started to open for the 2014 recruiting class.  With approximately 15 scholarships offered today (give or take a few), expect others to potentially commit very soon.  Why the change in philosophy from Coach Brown?  Who knows.  Maybe it is the fact that LSU is offering 8th graders scholarships or maybe it is just the “new and improved” Mack Brown.  Either way it is different for Texas.  Change is good, right?  For Mack it probably doesn’t matter much since he is used to claiming top 5 recruiting classes year in and year out.  We knew Mack was hip but this is borderline funkadelic.  Hook’em and stay tuned for more.
