The Texas Longhorns received some good news on Monday when JUCO offensive tackle Desmond Harrison (Contra Costa Community College) verbally committed to play football in Austin.

I will play at THE Univ. of Texas next fall. I’ve had a hard decision on my hands and i feel like this is the best situation for me. Hook’Em

Harrison chose the Longhorns over USC and Arizona State and becomes the 14th commit in a slow- growing 2013 class. Arizona State made a strong push, as the Sun Devils received commitments from his Contra Costa teammates Demetrius Cherry and Eriquel Florence, but Harrison’s ties to Texas seemed to play a role in his decision (he briefly lived in the Houston-area when he was younger).  He received offers from more than 20 schools and was one of the most sought-after JUCO offensive linemen available.

He is 6-foot-8, 315 lbs and is regarded as a three-star recruit.  Harrison becomes the second JUCO commit for Mack Brown’s 2013 class, joining Butte Community College tight end Geoff Swaim. While Swaim is already enrolled in classes at Texas, Harrison will finish his Associate’s degree this summer and immediately begin taking classes on the 40 Acres.

Hat’s off to the Texas staff for staying on top of Harrison and ultimately receiving the commitment.  He should jump in and compete for playing time immediately on an offensive line that looked shaky at times last season.
