X-factors to watch in Texas’ game against Texas A&M [VIDEO]

Texas Longhorns linebacker Barryn Sorrell (88) and Texas Longhorns defensive lineman Vernon Broughton (45) celebrates a tackle. For a lost against Oklahoma Sooners during the Red River Rivalry Football Game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the University of Texas Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, TX.

This weekend, the Texas Longhorns will renew their rivalry with Texas A&M after a 13 year wait. In the YouTube video above, our Devon Messinger and Dylan DeRaud name their X-factors to watch on Saturday.

For me, Quinn Ewers is the major X-factor to watch on Saturday. It is somewhat poetic that a lifelong Longhorn fan in Ewers will get to be the one that helps kickstart this rivalry once again. And, while Steve Sarkisian’s run offense will need to be more consistent, Ewers will be the key catalyst. As always, the Longhorn quarterback will have to keep a clean stat sheet, avoiding the turnovers. Additionally, the junior quarterback will be tasked with showcasing mobility on an injured ankle.

If Ewers can throw for a minimum of two touchdowns, the Longhorns will be in a good spot offensively. However, similar to the Georgia game, it will be just as important that Ewers is able to navigate the pocket under duress.

DeRaud’s X-Factors:

The X factor in this matchup for Texas will be Barryn Sorrell on defense. Texas A&M is lead by freshman quarterback Marcel Reed, whose dual threat ability running the ball is his greatest strength. In order to contain him, Sorrell will have the assignment of setting the edge opposite of Ethan Burke and Trey Moore. If Sorrell can hold his own outside and keep Reed in the pocket. The Longhorns can force the Aggies away from the style of play they want to maintain. Putting them at an advantage that allows for Texas to make Reed into a pocket passer.
