After leading his team to an electric fourth quarter comeback against Mississippi State on Saturday night, Texas quarterback Arch Manning left the game in overtime after sustaining a hit to the back of the helmet. Reports subsequently indicated that Manning sustained a concussion, which was supported by head coach Steve Sarkisian’s comments at Monday’s Vanderbilt press conference when asked about the sophmore signal caller’ status.
“He’s in protocol. We will know more later this week.”
With Manning sidelined for an undisclosed amount of time, redshirt senior and Troy University transfer Matthew Caldwell took reps with the offensive starters today at practice, per Sarkisian.
Caldwell entered the game due to Manning’s injury and floated the game-winning touchdown pass to Emmett Mosley V, allowing Texas to leave Starkville with a 45-38 OT win.
Caldwell will likely get his first start at Texas on Saturday when the Longhorns host Vanderbilt, barring a speedy comeback from the concussion by Manning. True Freshman quarterback KJ Lacey Jr. took snaps with the second team at Monday’s practice and would serve as the backup should Caldwell start.
