Texas Football’s true freshman EDGE, Colin Simmons, has been honored by being named to the Southeastern Conference’s All-Freshman Team on defense, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
In his debut season at Texas, Simmons has made a significant impact on a formidable Texas defense that tops the FBS in several categories, including turnovers gained (28) and passing yards allowed (143.1 ypg). Additionally, Texas ranks second in the FBS in scoring defense (12.5 ppg) and team passing efficiency defense (95.19), third in passes intercepted (19) and total defense (249.5 ypg). The Longhorns also rank fifth nationally in first down defense (196), sixth in third-down conversion percentage defense (30.6 percent), seventh in red zone defense (71.4 percent), 12th in team tackles for loss (7.3), and 15th in rushing defense (106.4). The Horns have allowed just four passing touchdowns through 13 games, tying for the fewest in the FBS and matching the program’s single-season record for fewest passing touchdowns allowed (1972).
Throughout the season, Simmons has played in all 13 games, leading the team in sacks (8.0-60) and ranking second in tackles for loss (12.5), quarterback hurries (8), and forced fumbles (3). The Dallas native leads all FBS freshmen in total sacks and sacks per game (0.62). His eight sacks are the third-most by a Texas freshman in a single season in program history.
Simmons is also in the running for the 2024 Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.
