Rodney Terry and the Texas Longhorns received some good news on Wednesday, as Link Academy (Dallas, TX) 5-star shooting guard Tre Johnson signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of Texas.
Johnson held offers from perennial programs such as Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, Kentucky and others, but ultimately chose the Longhorns over Baylor where his father Richard played. He is the top-rated player in the state of Texas and is the No. 5 player in the country, according to the 27Sports Composite Player Rankings.
Johnson went on the Pat McAfee show to announce his commitment and talked a little about his workout with former Longhorn and NBA superstar Kevin Durant last summer.
“I talked to him, bounced some ideas off his head. He said it’s a good place to come in and hoop and just play , great atmosphere. Just looking forward to getting down there on campus.”
Johnson averaged 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game in his junior year at Lake Highland High School (Dallas) before transferring to Link Academy. He shot 53% from the floor and 42 % from three-point range. Additionally, he helped Lake Highland win its first state basketball championship since 1968.
With Johnson’s commitment, the Longhorns vaulted into the No.4 spot in 247Sports’ 2024 Team Recruiting Rankings.
Johnson joins 4-star shooting guard Cam Scott (Lexington High School – Lexington, SC) and power forward Nic Codie (Newman Smith – Carrolton, TX) as signees in the Longhorns’ 2024 recruiting class. All three are Top-50 national prospects.
