Time for another edition of The Outsiders Edge, and it’s been quite an eventful week in the world of sports and non-sports. Let’s dig in and speak on a few issues.
People go nuts over SB5: Will it eventually pass? Most likely, and don’t be shocked if a second special session is called to finish the job on this. I have not read the bill blow-by-blow, but is regulating an invasive medical procedure and ensuring only qualified personnel near proper medical care facilities that wrong? I am not of the belief one should tell another how to live, nor am I in favor of dictating your morality to you, but I am for providing a safe environment for those choices to be made in.
The Defense of Marriage Act largely dies: My take on this? I really don’t care who you’re banging or how you get down. I won’t push my sexuality on them and they shouldn’t on me. Some brilliant people, who make this planet better every day, are folks who love folks of the same sex, same as folks who love folks of the opposite sex. So why don’t we just cut the crap and work to make the world a better place. There is supposed to be a separation of church and State, and marriage is an institution of the church right? If so, then what business of it is the State’s to regulate it?
Aaron Hernandez:Â I had a strong feeling when they didn’t pick him up last week the charge was going to be Murder. I believe the Patriots made all the right moves in this situation, and agree with their choice this morning to release him. Charged with the killing of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, Â Hernandez could spend the rest of his life in prison. In a best case scenario, the victim’s family will get all his money in the civil suit. Either way, the life of luxury is over. Â It amazes me just how stupid guys can be who are on top of the world.
The NCAA Hammers Oregon: Yeah, try not to laugh at this huge hit the Ducks have taken:
* Public reprimand and censure.
* Three years of probation from June 26, 2013, through June 25, 2016.
* An 18-month show cause order for former head coach Chip Kelly.
* A one-year show-cause order for the former assistant director of operations.
* A reduction of initial football scholarships by one from the maximum allowed (25) during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years (imposed by the university).
* A reduction of total football scholarships by one from the maximum allowed (85) during the 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years (imposed by the university).
* A reduction of official paid football visits from 56 to 37 for the 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
* A reduction of permissible football evaluation days from 42 to 36 in the fall of 2013, 2014 and 2015 and permissible football evaluation days from 168 to 144 in the spring of 2014, 2015 and 2016.
* A ban on the subscription to recruiting services during the probation period.
* A disassociation of the recruiting service provider (imposed by the university).
I bet USC Â just LOVES this. The image that comes to mind is Phil Knight burning a tied up Mark Emmert with a lit cigar and laughing.
Recruiting Coverage:Â Had the chance to do a piece on Coppell RB Gavin McDaniel, adding to the ones on Burleson QB Isaiah Hall and Burnet PK/WR Austin Huff. Great kids, and great stories of determination, stories that need to be told. If you have a chance, read up on these young men.
Mack Brown on The Radio: Though not as big as being on the Orange Report, Mack did about a 7 minute interview on ESPN Radio earlier this week. Nothing really earth shattering in it, but it’s worth a listen to hear about the direction of the offense.
Closing Question: How excited are you about the 2014 class?
Till next week, Hook Em!
