The decision was finally made and the starter going into the Oklahoma State game was David Ash.  It was a tough game to be thrown out there as “the guyâ€, but Ash showed some poise and the ability to make decisive decisions. Even in a loss, it looked like the right move for this team and it gave stability to a youthful offense in search of a leader.
The last two games against Kansas and Texas Tech have been a huge success for Ash as well as the Longhorns offense overall. He has shown a calm hand in completing big passes.  In these games he has also shown a keen maturity when deciding to just let some plays die rather than trying to force the issue and make a big play. David Ash is a true freshman quarterback, and while the expectations are not terribly high for this young team, he does give Longhorn fans around the country a solid hope for the future. Longhorn’s fans need to remember this is still an 18 yr old kid, and not expect him to be mistake free. He is acquiring big time competitive skills on the fly.
At some point we knew we would have to pay the fiddler. As a group, Longhorn fans were spoiled with the likes of Vince Young and Colt McCoy in consecutive years. While David Ash isn’t yet to that level, we must remember he isn’t going to be a Colt McCoy or a Vince Young. He has to do what fits his skill sets and do what works for him. So far, so good. As long as he is able to keep finding a way to win games and improve, fans and the team will gain confidence in him. We have literally seen him grow up the last two weeks. Looks like the coaches have chosen him as the starting quarterback. I would say he has earned it. Let’s get the Longhorn Nation behind our new guy and help him build for what could be a great career at Texas.
