The Countdown – #11

Over the next several weeks, Horn Sports is counting down the most important games of the 2014 football season. For this series, “most important games” is defined as those having the biggest impact on the program’s outlook and the 2014 season.

Texas Longhorns 2014 Most Important Games: #11 Iowa State Cyclones

With all due respect to Iowa State University, their dedicated alumni, and fans, Iowa State is not a big time football program. However, after last year’s fiasco in Ames, it is imperative for the Longhorns to come out and take it to the Cyclones early and often. The Longhorns are supposed to win this game – losing it would definitely be front page news, and a win does not bolster Texas’s national perception.

The Cyclones went 3-9 last season. Although they return their leading passer and rusher, I don’t see them putting up much of a fight in Austin.

About Iowa State:

Established in 1858, Iowa State University was the first land-grant university established under the Morrill Act. A legacy of research is strong on the campus – Iowa State is an AAU member, has the only on-campus US Department of Energy research laboratory, and is designated as a space-grant university. Iowa State also started the first official state veterinary college in 1879. It is still the only professional degree awarded by the university.

Even though research is what gave Iowa State’s it’s academic reputation, VEISHEA is what most of the students look forward to each year. VEISHEA is the annual celebration of the university and many musicians like Billy Joel and The Black Eye Peas perform at the annual festival. However, this past year’s VEISHEA ended in riots and the future of this almost 100 year tradition is in jeopardy.

Notable Alumni include Seneca Wallace, George Washington Carver, and Senator Tom Harkin.
