T’Vondre Sweat has been punishing offenses all season and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year was rewarded for it again on Friday night. Sweat won the Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the nation’s top interior lineman, and became the fourth Texas Longhorn in history to achieve the honor. The Huntsville, Texas native joins the likes of defensive tackle Scott Appleton (1963), guard Tommy Nobis (1965) and defensive tackle Brad Shearer (1977).
It was a season to remember for the fifth year senior who registered a career-high 42 tackles (17 solo), eight tackles for loss, two sacks, a blocked kick and a touchdown reception.
Sweat becomes the first player from the Big 12 to win the Outland Trophy since Sooner defensive tackle Jammal Brown won it in 2004. He will formally be presented with the award on January 10th at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner in Omaha, Nebraska.
