Chris Flanagan’s notes and thoughts from Texas’ 63-60 loss to Oklahoma.
The Longhorns led for most of the game but a Buddy Hield 3 pointer with 1.4 seconds left pushed the 3rd ranked Sooners past the #24 Longhorns 63-60.
*Player of the game
Buddy Hield
Hield scored 21 points in the second half which capped off an incredible performance for the senior guard. You can’t leave a player of his caliber wide open for a shot, especially with the game on the line. Hield drained the three and finished Oklahoma’s comeback for a win over Texas.
*Play of the game
Buddy Hield’s 3 pointer would be the obvious choice here but I’ll go with the offensive foul against Isaiah Taylor. Isaiah Taylor is at his best when he goes full speed and goes in for a layup either to make the bucket or get fouled. He is rarely called for an offensive foul. However, Taylor’s luck didn’t go his way with that call. The problem I have with the call is not that he didn’t push off, because he did. My biggest problem is the acting job by Lattin and the feeling that the foul call would not have been called
in Austin or better yet, in the first 5 minutes of the game.
*Epilogue
This was an opportunity for the Longhorns to have a chance to move into 1st place. It didn’t happen. The difficult part of this loss is that the Longhorns had this game in the hands from the opening tip and let it slip away in the final seconds. Now, the
Longhorns go back to Austin only to travel to Ames to play Iowa State. The Cyclones are looking for revenge after losing in Austin in January. The Longhorns will be looking to bounce back but it won’t be an easy task against a good Iowa State team.
