The far-reaching arm of the Texas national recruiting effort has stretched it’s way to Lake Stevens, Washington and quarterback Jacob Eason. The 2016 standout has already received offers from Georgia, Florida State, and Miami and made a visit to Austin this past Saturday while he was in the lone star state for the DFW Elite 11 Camp.
Eason had an impressive performance at the Elite 11 camp, but as with any 2016 prospect, there are still aspects of his game that need improvement. Eason realizes the need to improve, saying, “I’m going to work on my footwork. Obviously I’m not the fastest kid but I need to work on that and keeping my shoulders level and my mechanics when I’m going through my progressionsâ€.
Despite the fact that most of the coaching staff was not on campus, Eason said he really enjoyed his visit to Austin, “It was good to come out and see a school that I’m interested in. We toured the facilities and everything and I really liked it. I met some nice graduate assistants and some nice coaches, who toured me around. I liked everything I saw. They are making improvements on the field – that’s already huge and now it’s going to be even bigger. I like Texas.â€
Eason hasn’t received an offer yet from the Longhorns, but that’s not on his mind right now, “They haven’t (offered) yet, that’s one of the things I’m working towards. I’m not worried about that yet, but I’m hoping it will come in the future.â€
Pulling a player halfway across the country is never easy in recruiting, but Longhorn fans will be happy to hear that Eason has no problems leaving the Pacific Northwest to play his college ball. When asked about leaving Washington, Eason said, “Playing away from home wouldn’t really bother me. If I’m going to have offers from across the country, I’m not going to restrict myself just the West Coast.â€
When asked what stood out the most about his visit to Texas, Eason said, “I really liked the people and the vibe. Everyone is going to have nice stuff, but at Texas the people really stood out to me.â€
Eason has been in steady contact with quarterback coach Shawn Watson, and his dad has spoken with Charlie Strong a few times. Eason has no leaders at this point but says he’s looking at coaching, academics, pro potential, winning percentage, and prestige as factors that will help him make his college choice.
In recent years Texas has seen a perception change with recruits while Baylor and Texas A&M have been on the rise. Eason said he hasn’t noticed that, “I view Texas as probably the biggest school in Texas. Texas has a lot of schools, but I see Texas as number one. Everywhere I go down here I see Texas. “ Adding, “If I were to go to a school in Texas, I’d probably go to Texas.â€
Eason has a camp tour set up for this summer including a run through Florida, and through the south. He also hopes to get back to Texas, up to Michigan, and to Notre Dame, along with camps on the West Coast.
Eason has a genuine interest in Texas and rated the visit an eight out of ten. “It was a good visit, I got to see everything and I liked what I saw.â€
