Texas has added a big defensive piece with the commitment of Rocky Cummings, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound standout from Carlsbad, California, who flipped from Cal. Cummings is a prospect who brings versatility and upside to the Longhorns’ linebacker room. A consensus three-star prospect, Cummings is ranked as the No. 600 player nationally and the No. 50 linebacker, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Cummings is the 24th commitment in a class that ranks No. 8 in the composite team rankings and the third linebacker to pledge to co-defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen.
Cummings is a rangy defender who’s lined up across multiple linebacker spots. He attacks off the edge with a quick first step, uses his length to create problems, and closes with impressive speed. In the middle, he tracks ball carriers with discipline, shows the ability to drop into coverage, and plays lanes well in the passing game.
With his frame, he has plenty of room to add healthy bulk and develop into a high-impact defender in Austin.
