Follow along as our Devon Messinger jots down notes from today’s game between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Texas Longhorns.
First Quarter:
For the first time since September 28th’s game against Mississippi State, the Longhorns have scored a touchdown on their first drive. Despite starting in a third & long scenario, Quinn Ewers was able to find Matthew Golden for multiple first downs. Afterwards, a three-yard touchdown pass to Gunnar Helm finished the job.
Second Quarter:
After a quick start to the game, the Longhorns slowed down to start the second quarter. After an explosive pass from Kentucky quarterback Brock Vandagriff to Ja’Mori Maclin, the Wildcats scored later in the drive with a Vandagriff pass to Josh Kattus.
Unfortunately for the Longhorns, playing to the level of competition has been the norm this season. While Kentucky’s defense has been solid this year, the Longhorns have struggled at times to distance themselves from opponents in the first half.
Despite of the early struggles to the second quarter, Texas was aided by a drive-extending penalty that ultimately resulted in a Jaydon Blue touchdown rush. If Texas can stop Kentucky and add another score to the scoreboard, they will be in great position to start the second half of action.
Thanks to a beautiful interception from Texas defensive back Jelani McDonald, the Longhorns were able to regain possession. Afterwards, Quinn Ewers threw his second touchdown pass of the day to Gunnar Helm. On the play, Ewers showed beautiful touch on the 17-yard throw over the head of the Wildcat defender.
