For all the splash of facebook, twitter is more universal. Tweets are quoted on all major news programs, even on Fox, and are part of late night warp-ups at the Olympics. Major announcements, or 'notices' of something, are routinely referenced to twitter. Problem with twitter is that it all depends on who you are, regards saying anything. Millions may read and monitor, but only to a very small percent does it matter what they say.

The Dalai Lama, @DalaiLama, has 8.48 million followers, and doesn't follow anyone.
