Vince Young believes in Strong, direction of post-Patterson Texas
Good riddance.
That seemed to be Vince Young's stance on departed Texas athletic director Steve Patterson when the all-time Longhorns great spoke recently to CBS Sports about his past, present and a bright future ahead.
“With the AD stuff, I have nothing against Mr. Patterson,†Young said, “but some of the things he was doing, he was changing the atmosphere at UT. At UT, we're one big family.â€
Patterson resigned under pressure Sept. 15 after a brief, stormy stay as athletic director. The former pro and college executive reportedly charged 50-year alums $25 each to be recognized on the field before a game.
“What he was doing, I just couldn't accept that,†Young said. “DeLoss (Dodds) and Coach (Darrell) Royal, they built this for a reason. That's why people love UT, because it's a big family. Everybody gets a long with each other. What he brought to the table, it was all about money.
“Other people run their university like that.â€
Young has become a spokesman of sorts for the university and, by extension, the football program. As a development officer in Texas' Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, Young is available as a public speaker.
That's almost strange to hear for the 2005 Heisman Trophy runner-up, who didn't want to speak to the media when Reggie Bush beat him out that year.
“I was very upset about that. I was crying,†Young recalled. “I didn't want to do media. Coach [Mack] Brown told me to do it.â€
Of course, Young is most famous for leading the ‘Horns to the 2005 national championship. What followed was an uneven pro career from 2006-11 during which he admittedly lost millions in bad investments.
In that time, Young, 32, was also returning to campus to complete his degree, even while with the Tennessee Titans. Young said the Titans discouraged him from leaving the team during the week to take classes.
“There were mad at me because I was getting an education. They told me I should be playing football,†Young said.
He finally got his Youth and Community Studies degree from Texas in May 2013.
Since Patterson's departure, things have calmed a bit at Texas. While the Longhorns have endured heartbreaking losses to Cal and Oklahoma State, they've at least been entertaining. The addition of interim AD Mike Perrin has given coach Charlie Strong increased stability.
Young, for one, believes in what Strong is doing at Texas.
“Ever since he walked on campus, I had a relationship with [strong] and the coaching staff. You can see what's going on. Definitely, I like the discipline because they're going to need that when they get in the pros. And not just the pros, but in everyday life,†he said.
“I know everybody wants to win, but it's not all about winning. Let's make sure they graduate first.â€
