WOODSHED

One word to describe the game, WOODSHED.  We were taken out behind the woodshed and beaten.  Payback for the years of TEXAS being on top and teams are going to dogpile on us.   Instead of recording a "signature win" . .. CFS presides over the worst loss in his short tenure at TEXAS.   TCU is simply that much better than us.  And before you scream "young players". . . .we put up 7 points on a team who's defense was missing 5 or 6 projected starters so spare me the young players excuse.  They started plenty of young players and you cannot begin to tell me their 2 deep is more talented than our starters. Our players are not being coached up.  They continue to make the same mistakes over and over.  We were teased with 30 minutes and 1 series of good defense. . . . then we reverted to what we have seen all year.  What is the other favorite excuse. . .oh yes, the offense let us down.  30-0 at the end of the 1st and that was with forcing 2 punts. . . forced 2 punts in the 2nd period. . .37-0 at half. . a moral victory, we only gave up 7.  TEXAS was down by 6 scores at half, think about that.  Game was over.

"Gotta give them credit". . . . .Gary Patterson is simply an outstanding football coach.   He so outschemed Norvell and coached up his beaten and battered D it was just silly.   That was a clinic on how to take inferior players and use coaching and execution (did you see many missed tackles?) to shut down an opponent.

If this was any indication, Jay Norvell is not our play caller next year.  Though we did find one play, we set up to show a sweep right look, hand the ball to the RB and he cuts back left.  Otherwise easily Heard's worst game.  Why we insisted on throwing so much vs a well coached but undersized TCU D (even their backups know how to tackle and play fundamental football. . . what a concept)  is simply beyond me.  TCU's D out schemed  us and instead of attacking where they were weak, we played into their hands and kept trying to throw the ball short . . .they were scheming our short passes.

We had two drives of note in the game, one beautiful drive right before half. . .we ran the ball. . .we ran the ball. . .we ran the ball.  19 plays .. . .this is resting your D . ..this is wearing out the opponent.  the other an 11 play drive, where we leaned on the run.   Yet with a team whipping our OL in pass pro usually with just their down linemen, we insisted on throwing the ball short.  With their DBs playing press on us.

Looking at the starting line up, I see the name Foreman and can only wonder why A Foreman starts and D Foreman rides the pine.  The WR Foreman had 2 passes hit him in the hands and another where he could not position himself to catch.  We have to have playmakers.  What does D Foreman do the 1st time he touches the ball?.  ..He goes for 17 yards, he runs hard, he doesn't go down at 1st contact, he makes plays.   Gray 18 touches 3.7 ypc  Foreman 15 touches 6.2 ypc.  Further we have burned Chris Warren's redshirt and now he does not see the field.

I continue to be at a loss as to why we have not turned McNeil into an HBack/Hybrid WR.  It is clear that neither Beck nor DeLaTorre are a threat in the passing game.  It is also clear that McNeil is a match up nightmare for  a defense or should be.  Or perhaps the hype was complete nonsense but it is also clear that Heard needs a safety blanket.  Nor do we seem to run many combination routes.   But at the end of the day, many thought Mack was foolish to being so loyal to Greg Davis . . .yet GD left us with records, titles and great memories.  Same cannot be said for CFS and Watson (though Mack and his OL coaches did us no favors with OL recruiting).  a year and a half into CFS' tenure and we still are suffering by having no offensive identity.  I really wanted to like Watson. . .great interview. . great hair. . . but at the the end of the day .. . what he was selling didn't work here.  Here's a hint Charlie. . . RUN THE FLACKING BALL. . . you've got some really good RBs . ..Gray I buy as a 3rd down back/pass catcher . .. let them carry the team and don't put the team on Jerrod's shoulders . ..yet.

Worse news, CFS and Bedford are not coaching this group of defensive players up.  After a decent game vs Ok Lite, we saw Duke "Toast" Thomas return to form.  Seriously, I was embarrassed for him talking trash to Doctson who has turned the TEXAS secondary into his personal bitch in the past 2 seasons.  Rest of the secondary was not any better but yes, I will give true freshman a bit of a pass.  Plenty of "coaching moments" to be had Saturday.

On Deck

The Red River War.  stooper has his guys playing better .. . . . .CFS. . . not so much.   No pressure Charlie, simply the biggest game every year vs a rival that truly hates us.  You had the game won last year but it was given away.  Sadly OU is better than last year and we are not.  Can you rally the team?  Can you coach them up?  1-4 which means to go bowling, we need to finish 5-2.  Right now that looks like a pretty tall order.

And don't look now, not just this season but this recruiting year.  To make things worse, not only are the Horns on their way to a Johnny Mon 1997 type year, the gomers in dead dog ville seem to be playing well.  While I love the offensive talent CFS is landing, where's the beef on the D side (Malik Jefferson not withstanding)

My playoff teams

Mich State

Baylor

Clemson  Don't see anyone in the ACC beating them

LSU  except their QB play sucks

Next 4

Would a contender in the Pac 12 please stand up

tOSU  bumbling stumbling but the champs are still unbeaten, can they beat both Mich and Mich St?

TCU

Bama. . . . .just PUNKED Georgia, pretenders once again. Bama needs some help to win the west but if they get it, they jump into the top 4

Why I have been calling for a pink slip for Bedford since he was hired. 1A biggest mistake Charlie made was not keeping Greg Robinson. Not hiring a spread offense OC was his 1B biggest mistake.

I said the same thing about #47 etc in the slot.WTH ??? Not going to scare anyone out there. Too dang slow to do anything in space and drops passes half the time. Also said the same thing about RB. #33 should be the main man....and what happened to Warren ?? Is he hurt ?

"We have to play better", "We need leadership". "We have to learn how to complete".

"When you don't have a key guy.."..........BS Charlie....The problem is you don't have that key coach because you let them go and brought in a bunch of clowns.

Charlie throwing older players under the bus in presser.

The biggest problem we have is COACHING.

Like Galindo stated..."TCU started out slow at Minnesota.... and there were questions about their inexperienced defense but Patterson fines a way to make things work." COACHING

Lorenzo Joe should be playing instead of M. Johnson.

I like what Norvell said...My question is will Charlie let him make changes he needs to make.

Thanks, echeese. Always enjoy your posts, and as usual we are pretty much in agreement.

I will make some observations below, with the understanding that I know we are a very young team, our offensive line sucks and the offense is being installed on the run. I think we all know the reasons why. These are not necessarily in order of importance.

1.The team was mentally unprepared for the game. Period.

2. The offensive line performed better when Hutchins was not in the game. But it still sucked.

3. The defensive secondary was essentially lost most of the day. It did not appear that they knew what their assignments were.....certainly they did not cover well.

4. D. Foreman is by far our best running back. Kudos to Gray for being a good team guy, but Foreman should be in the game if we are going to run the football.

5. Our backs do much better when they run north-south. We are terrible at running east-west.

6. Jerrod Heard is not yet our quarterback of the future. He plays like he is still in high school. But he isn't. Swoopes is a much better passer, and seemed to play better when he was in there.

7. For whatever reason, our current offensive scheme is not as good as we see on Friday nights around Texas. It is a work in progress, sure, but if we can't execute a better offense, we are in even deeper trouble that it appears.

8. Part of #7, but our receivers are not running routes that can get them open most of the time. Is it scheme, execution, or both?

9. Jinkens had the best defensive day, it appeared. Made a few good plays. Nobody else really showed up.

10. We desperately need a new kicker. Our punter is still very much a work in progress.

11. Kris Boyd needs to have his ass kicked....hard. If he wants to leave, let it be now. We don't need smart asses on the team.

12. Coach Strong needs to take a long look at the entirety of his staff at the end of the season. He should know by now what it will take to compete at this level. Some of his staff just have not shown they can do the job. We need top notch folks that know how to design a competitive offense and expertly coach the components of the offense. The same on defense. I don't see too much of that now.. :(

13. Any defensive scheme that puts Naashon Hughes on Turpin without safety help is sheer stupidity.

14. Will add as I think of more.

Charlie Strong is a joke of a coach and has screwed this team every way possible:

- Kick 11-13 players off the team, many of which were highly recruited O linemen, then complain that there is no depth

-Then saying it had to be done become some players weren't buying in; now he saying it again, he doesn't have player buy-in. Kick a dozen more off Charlie.

- Maybe there isn't any buy in because the players recognize that he doens't know what he is doing.

- Charlie is always out-coached. He makes talented players worse and has no game day plan strategy; at least none that works.

- He continuously ridicules the upperclassmen, then complains they are not providing leadership ; Like you are, Charlie?

- Bitches constantly that the coaches are providing all the leadership. then stands on the sideline looking completely lost as his team unravels on the field.

- Does not have the intelligence to see for a full year that that Watson and Swoopes were not the right people for their jobs.

- Fails again and again to develop even adequate game plans resulting in the worst loses in school history

- Has driven this team to lows that haven't been seen in nearly a century

- Constanly blames the players for the problems we are facing; is that the way to rally the team, Charlie?

And some people are arguing adamantly that he needs more time to turn this around? Exactly what would giving Charlie more time accomplish? We've seen what he can do already.

Charlie has to go ASAP. Like Florida did with Muschamp and Aggie did with Francione, fire him but let him finish the season.

Send a message to the players and potential recruits that change is coming.

Can't argue with anything you said, Cheese.

I like how you don't sugarcoat it.   :D

Joeywa, I'll be normal again in a day or so. Just venting. The way we are losing is hard to take. I know we all want the same thing here even if our strategies differ.
What does "normal" constitute?  I agree that losing sucks.  Winning is fun.  It has been a long few years for Longhorn fans.  The advice of "patience, we're rebuilding" is never easy to adhere to.

Chris Warren got hurt against Cal when healthy he should be #2 back behind Foreman.Texas lacks leadership from upperclassmen because most can`t produce on field which makes leading impossible but i`m tired of seeing the same players make the same mistakes but playing time is not taken away.if it`s a young player making mistake you hope experience overcomes but when it`s sr`s their playing time needs to stop.if Doyle,Flowers, and Hutchins continue to play then Wickline needs to be gone tomorrow no excuse for the penalties and whiffed blocks every game they are not big12 quality players play the younger guys and see if any of them might be able to play.Marcus Johnson playing instead of Lorenzo Joe and Dorian Leonard is same as with o-line Johnson has shown he isn`t good enough time to see if young receivers are.the Texas offense is a trainwreck made worse by continuing to play seniors instead of youth is wasting another year on players who have been given chance after chance time to cut cord. on defense the secondary is a mess and playing Haines and Hall at safety is matchup nightmare vs any decent team combined with playing Duke Thomas at corner means Texas defense is subpar at 3 spots in secondary before game starts. Malik is not a MLB playing him there does not use his talent correctly and LB`S as group are horrible in pass coverage.2015 should be about 2016 now any playing time a senior gets should be because of injury and injury alone this senior class will be shut out of NFL draft for 2nd time in 3 years

Hutchins was benched in favor of Rodriquez in the 2nd half. . . .have not gone back to watch exactly when.
