WOODSHED
One word to describe the game, WOODSHED. We were taken out behind the woodshed and beaten. Payback for the years of TEXAS being on top and teams are going to dogpile on us. Instead of recording a "signature win" . .. CFS presides over the worst loss in his short tenure at TEXAS. TCU is simply that much better than us. And before you scream "young players". . . .we put up 7 points on a team who's defense was missing 5 or 6 projected starters so spare me the young players excuse. They started plenty of young players and you cannot begin to tell me their 2 deep is more talented than our starters. Our players are not being coached up. They continue to make the same mistakes over and over. We were teased with 30 minutes and 1 series of good defense. . . . then we reverted to what we have seen all year. What is the other favorite excuse. . .oh yes, the offense let us down. 30-0 at the end of the 1st and that was with forcing 2 punts. . . forced 2 punts in the 2nd period. . .37-0 at half. . a moral victory, we only gave up 7. TEXAS was down by 6 scores at half, think about that. Game was over.
"Gotta give them credit". . . . .Gary Patterson is simply an outstanding football coach. He so outschemed Norvell and coached up his beaten and battered D it was just silly. That was a clinic on how to take inferior players and use coaching and execution (did you see many missed tackles?) to shut down an opponent.
If this was any indication, Jay Norvell is not our play caller next year. Though we did find one play, we set up to show a sweep right look, hand the ball to the RB and he cuts back left. Otherwise easily Heard's worst game. Why we insisted on throwing so much vs a well coached but undersized TCU D (even their backups know how to tackle and play fundamental football. . . what a concept) is simply beyond me. TCU's D out schemed us and instead of attacking where they were weak, we played into their hands and kept trying to throw the ball short . . .they were scheming our short passes.
We had two drives of note in the game, one beautiful drive right before half. . .we ran the ball. . .we ran the ball. . .we ran the ball. 19 plays .. . .this is resting your D . ..this is wearing out the opponent. the other an 11 play drive, where we leaned on the run. Yet with a team whipping our OL in pass pro usually with just their down linemen, we insisted on throwing the ball short. With their DBs playing press on us.
Looking at the starting line up, I see the name Foreman and can only wonder why A Foreman starts and D Foreman rides the pine. The WR Foreman had 2 passes hit him in the hands and another where he could not position himself to catch. We have to have playmakers. What does D Foreman do the 1st time he touches the ball?. ..He goes for 17 yards, he runs hard, he doesn't go down at 1st contact, he makes plays. Gray 18 touches 3.7 ypc Foreman 15 touches 6.2 ypc. Further we have burned Chris Warren's redshirt and now he does not see the field.
I continue to be at a loss as to why we have not turned McNeil into an HBack/Hybrid WR. It is clear that neither Beck nor DeLaTorre are a threat in the passing game. It is also clear that McNeil is a match up nightmare for a defense or should be. Or perhaps the hype was complete nonsense but it is also clear that Heard needs a safety blanket. Nor do we seem to run many combination routes. But at the end of the day, many thought Mack was foolish to being so loyal to Greg Davis . . .yet GD left us with records, titles and great memories. Same cannot be said for CFS and Watson (though Mack and his OL coaches did us no favors with OL recruiting). a year and a half into CFS' tenure and we still are suffering by having no offensive identity. I really wanted to like Watson. . .great interview. . great hair. . . but at the the end of the day .. . what he was selling didn't work here. Here's a hint Charlie. . . RUN THE FLACKING BALL. . . you've got some really good RBs . ..Gray I buy as a 3rd down back/pass catcher . .. let them carry the team and don't put the team on Jerrod's shoulders . ..yet.
Worse news, CFS and Bedford are not coaching this group of defensive players up. After a decent game vs Ok Lite, we saw Duke "Toast" Thomas return to form. Seriously, I was embarrassed for him talking trash to Doctson who has turned the TEXAS secondary into his personal bitch in the past 2 seasons. Rest of the secondary was not any better but yes, I will give true freshman a bit of a pass. Plenty of "coaching moments" to be had Saturday.
On Deck
The Red River War. stooper has his guys playing better .. . . . .CFS. . . not so much. No pressure Charlie, simply the biggest game every year vs a rival that truly hates us. You had the game won last year but it was given away. Sadly OU is better than last year and we are not. Can you rally the team? Can you coach them up? 1-4 which means to go bowling, we need to finish 5-2. Right now that looks like a pretty tall order.
And don't look now, not just this season but this recruiting year. To make things worse, not only are the Horns on their way to a Johnny Mon 1997 type year, the gomers in dead dog ville seem to be playing well. While I love the offensive talent CFS is landing, where's the beef on the D side (Malik Jefferson not withstanding)
My playoff teams
Mich State
Baylor
Clemson Don't see anyone in the ACC beating them
LSU except their QB play sucks
Next 4
Would a contender in the Pac 12 please stand up
tOSU bumbling stumbling but the champs are still unbeaten, can they beat both Mich and Mich St?
TCU
Bama. . . . .just PUNKED Georgia, pretenders once again. Bama needs some help to win the west but if they get it, they jump into the top 4
