Given a choice, I'd prefer the new gym to be on campus

This is only the opening public round of discussion.  Many private rounds of discussions have already transpired.  The preferred scenario in this report may very well be the most likely and most conservative solution.  The "smaller basketball field house solution" does not stand a ghost of a chance.  Just my opinion.

Nope

ATX needs a larger venue to host many other events. My assumption is the city will share in the costs of the building, unless UT wants to pocket rent money and manage the building themselves. Because we can

Yep.

Actually, I agree with you.  Personally, i would like to see a larger, multi-functional facility on the Austin American Statesman site, south of Town Lake, east of Congress Avenue - a facility that would be large enough to house a national political convention.  You could accommodate students with trolleys from campus down Red River - just think of all of the tax revenue that could be realized by all fifty of those students stopping off at Sixth Street for drinks on the way back to campus.  All kidding aside, this solution would enhance urban planning with regards to the Convention Center District and enhance the south east part of down town, economically, for decades to come.  The problem is that I have no confidence in the City of Austin and the University of Texas to be able to coordinate such an endeavor.  The City could do it, but the University likes to control its' own projects, kind of like the State of Texas likes to do likewise, and I think that that way of thinking will win out in this case.  I would like to be pleasantly surprised.  Though, I will not hold my breath.

Does it strike anyone else as extremely funny that with Patterson gone, we are building, proposing, and handing out great looking backpacks?

I don't think that I've ever detested a man so much. He was such a tool.

Personally I hate the idea of a massive arena what will never be full for basketball. . . and Austin does not have the hotel infrastructure to host a national political convention though that doesn't mean a multi use center could not host other conventions.

Kinda like the F 35 (ok, gotta be a military geek to follow this logic).  . .you try to build something that makes everyone happy. . .and no one ends up happy.

Of course I also think it's stupid to keep expanding DKR. . .I remember the Kansas game in 2005. . . even though we were on our way to a Natty, the stadium was not full.
