Turner

Hey, Juan!  Did you notice in that photo that Myles is holding a Burnt Orange basketball?  That's gotta be a dead giveaway, right?  ;)

Saw this article in the Deadly Toxin, er, I mean the Daily Texan, today, written by David, er, I mean Evan Berkowitz, who is attempting mightily to prove that he is real journalist, and not a homer.  Geez!  If he keeps this up, maybe he can get a job with the Austin American Statesman.

http://www.dailytexanonline.com/sports/2014/04/23/why-five-star-recruit-myles-turner-should-not-choose-texas

And I quote ...

"Why five-star recruit Myles Turner should not choose Texas

Basketball fans dream about walking through the tunnels at Allen Fieldhouse or hitting a buzzer-beater against North Carolina at Cameron Indoor Stadium.  But not many imagine hitting a game-winning shot at the Frank Erwin Center.  So why would Myles Turner, the lone uncommitted five-star recruit in the 2014 class, choose to attend Texas?  The 6-foot-10 high school senior, who attends Trinity High School, could potentially transform whatever school he chooses to attend into a legitimate championship contender. He can knock down jumpers, dominate inside and protect the rim.  Seven schools are still chasing him: Duke, Kansas, SMU, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Texas.  Some reports have Turner leaning toward Texas — he even tweeted admiration of the school last week. But if I were Turner, I would take the nod of recent Texas high school greats and spurn the Longhorns.  Kentucky’s Julius Randle, Baylor’s Isaiah Austin and class of 2014 five-star recruit and SMU committ Emmanual Mudiay all chose other schools.  Here are a few reasons why.

The Atmosphere

No matter how successful the basketball program is for Texas, it isn’t football.  Longhorn fans aren’t the most passionate about basketball. Fans don’t show up for nonconference game, and only games against Oklahoma and Kansas seem to get fans on their feet.  The Erwin Center is devoid of a deafening atmosphere. Even if the crowd is relatively large, seats almost always look empty because of the size of the building.  Wouldn’t Turner rather play at Allen Fieldhouse, the place ESPN ranked as the loudest stadium in college basketball?  Heck, even SMU’s newly renovated Moody Coliseum offers a better basketball experience than the Erwin Center.

The Spotlight

Texas basketball doesn’t get a lot of attention around Austin.  Even though the team was ranked in the top 20 this past season, the only thing Longhorn fans could pay attention to was the beginning of new football head coach Charlie Strong’s program. Part of this is attributable to the Big 12 Conference itself, as it’s not too flashy. The Big 12 is deep, and one could even make the case that it was the best conference last year. But only Kansas was really ever a championship contender.  The ACC, Big 10 and even the AAC had more weeks in the top 10 than the Big 12. While the No. 20 and No. 21 teams matching up is a good game, the country will always pay more attention to perennial top-5 teams. If Turner went to Duke or Ohio State, he would have more high-profile games to boost his stock.

Coaching

Rick Barnes is a good coach. But would people rather play for him than Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Kansas’ Bill Self or SMU’s Larry Brown? Turner will likely turn pro after one year, and, while talented, his game is in need of considerable molding. Barnes is not the best man to do that. Krzyzewski, Self and Brown all have considerable experience preparing players for the NBA.  Close proximity to home and following the path of his favorite player Kevin Durant are compelling reasons for Turner to attend Texas. But, with the wealth of experience he could gain elsewhere, are the Longhorns really the best place for Turner to play in college? "

So, Myles ... if you read this forum, which you probably don't, please do not listen to David, er, I mean Evan Berkowitz.  If you like those Burnt Orange basketballs as much as you seem to as far as all of the recent photographs of you seem to indicate,  dream of your bionic super self incorporating the awesome combined super powers of Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge.  Come to Texas, our athletic department makes more money than any of those others, and we can afford to buy lots of Burnt Orange basketballs!  ;)

why oh why is it, that people tend to forget that your's truly "myles turner" if first and foremost a TEXAN?  is it at all possible, that mr. turner could just care less about all of the attributes, as per the other places, venues, etc...?

MAYBE MYLES TURNER, JUST LOVES THE DISTINCT HONOR OF BEING A TEXAN FIRST AND FOREMOST.   MAYBE MYLES TURNER, APPLAUDS THE STRONG POSSIBILITY AS PER SHOWCASING HIS BEAUTIFUL GAME, AT THE UNIVERSITY TEXAS!  just saying...

Hey, it is the off season ,,, things are slow ... so here we go ... Curry.schoff, wrote the article posted below over at Burnt Orange Nation to refute the article written by David, er, I mean Evan Berkowitz, over at the Daily Texan yesterday.  Curry kind of, sort of, outed David, er, I mean Evan Berkowitz, thusly ...

"Not to mention, a little research into the author of the above Daily Texan column revealed a photo of the author with someone in Kansas Jayhawks gear. Excellent troll, sir."

Curry had this to say about Coach Barnes ...

"Rick Barnes has groomed twelve NBA players during his tenure at Texas, and while that number may not be crazy impressive, the names on the list are. Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, Tristan Thompson, and Royal Ivey highlight a number of high-caliber NBA players developed in Austin by Barnes. While Coach K, Bill Self, and Larry Brown's names resonate at a different level, the notion that Rick Barnes struggles with developing players is also incorrect."

And, Curry had this to say about a realistic place that Texas could claim for itself in college basketball ...

"Looking for a fair comparison? I'd say Florida. Texas fans can do what Florida fans have done to create a notorious home-court advantage in the SEC. Last year was simply a reminder of the excitement Texas basketball could bring to the Forty Acres. Next season, with the potential addition of Myles Turner, it could be standing room only at the Frank Erwin Center."

Myles Turner, No. 2 Basketball Recruit, to Announce College Selection on ESPNU

Myles Turner, No. 2 in the ESPN 100, will announce his college selection during ESPNU’s Recruiting Nation: Announcement Special on Wednesday, April 30, at 4 p.m. ET. The 7’0’’ center from Bedford, Texas, is expected to choose between Duke, Kansas, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Southern Methodist, Texas and Texas A&M. Recruiting director Paul Biancardi, recruiting analyst Gerry Hamilton and host Matt Schick will anchor the telecast.

Turner is a five-star recruit from Trinity High School in Texas. He is a McDonald’s All-American and was selected to play in the 2014 Jordan Brand Classic.  Additional information on Turner can be found via his ESPN.com Recruiting Nation page.

“Myles Turner can impact the game with his shot altering and blocking ability. His timing is excellent and his wing span is enormous,†explains Biancardi.  “Offensively, it’s his face-up game, with range that extends out to the arc, that produces his scoring. His low post game and his overall body strength are under construction. However, Turner has ascended among the nation’s best. He is an elite prospect who oozes with potential and even is better young man.â€

Biancardi, Hamilton and Schick will discuss Turner’s decision and its impact on college basketball’s top programs throughout the 30-minute special. After the show, ESPN.com’s Recruiting Nation will have further analysis on Turner’s decision and updated class rankings.

So, after the announcement, we are gonna have more discussion,  I get the feeling everything that needs to be said has been said.  I really want him to come to Texas, but this is too much already. (says one of the guys who tries to keep this thread alive!)  ;)   I do not know how you guys that follow football recruiting carefully, don't just get burned out after a while.

it is ridiculous BS.

Myles Turner began his work at the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team training camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado starting on the 10th of June.   Have not heard any news of how it is going.  Maybe some altitude work will do him some good.

The other center on the team is a year younger than Myles, so I guess we can assume that Myles will get a lot of playing time in the games.  This can do nothing but help him and help Texas in the long run.
Myles needs to start recruiting Zimmerman. Apparently, those two are very close. I've actually seen a few RTs on Twitter where Zimmerman's mom even calls the two "like brothers". We've offered him, so maybe with a good season and Myles he might look at Texas.
