Tom Herman

I think all this is funny.  One of the biggest responsibilites a head coach has is to hire a competent coaching staff to build a program around.  Not one person is against hiring Tom Herman to be the next head coach at UT, but he currently has (3) former UT assistants on his staff, Major Applewhite, Oscar Giles and Darrell Wyatt, whom we deemed as needing to go for various reasons.  Can't wait to see how this all turns out.
D'oh!

Well, let's review each assistant's rumored shortcomings briefly.

Applewhite - infidelity

Giles - poor recruiter

Wyatt - ??? Anybody got an opinion?

Interesting post!

I don't recall hearing anything negative about any of these three coaches (coaching or recruiting).  I remember when Charlie ended up hiring the WR Coach that OU had just fired; many were calling on him to contact Wyatt.... Furthermore, many hoped that he would be retained when CS was hired....

Agree with Dee, at least with regard to Giles and Wyatt. Myself and others were saddened by Wyatt's departure. He's a good coach.

The only thing about Applewhite that causes me pause are the legal issues and his past here. If that's not an issue, legally or otherwise, I have no problem with the Major being on staff here.

SHA  have you heard any rumblings or rumors that you would like to share with all of us.  And before anyone on this board thats issue with any rumors shared, please read, they are only rumors Not Chiseled in Stone.

Sure. I've been told that Peterson won't consider leaving the Pac NW. I was told back channels are at a fast pace right now. Herman's agent has been spoken with on a regular basis by people who are known as "set up" people. They do the talking so it never comes back to us. The objective is to have the table set when the time comes.

They want Herman at the table.

I have not heard anything since the SMU loss, though. That game wouldn't have changed my mind on him.

I have heard Harsin's name thrown around. Nothing as serious as Herman's case but we're interested.

We are concerned with LSU. They are equally interested in Herman. It's an attractive destiny job, like Texas. And it's in the SEC. Herman could do great things at LSU. So could Briles, who is also being considered at LSU.

We do not want to get beat to the punch.

I asked about other names out there, reluctantly mentioning Saban's name. He laughed. Said the two mentioned are the only two we're really seriously interested in, but its still early. Some BMDs have their own thoughts that may get some attention.

Who found and hired Mack? Was it Deloss or the bmd's

BMD.

BMDs proposed Gary Barnett, who was quite popular at the time. So Deloss went to visit Barnett. Before coming back, another BMD suggested Deloss give Mack a visit. Deloss and Mack hit it off. Deloss returned and recommended the Mack Brown hire.

This may all be true, however I remember that Mack blew away the committee just like he got all the fans excited his first couple of years. Gary Barnett did not make a good impression. I do remember that Doug English was on the committee.

Barnett was at a peak and was sorta in love with himself at the time. Mack "spoke the language" and Deloss immediately saw that and couldn't wait to get him in front of the committee.

All in all, I think it worked out for the best. I hated all those lopsided losses to OU, but we got a NC and lots of other great moments as well. It was a good run. A good time for Texas, until the last few years.

DKR also had a fondness for Mack....that wouldnt have hurt any future coach's chances at the 40......

Yeah, Mack sought DKR's advice and input on many occasions well before he came to Texas. As head coach at Tulane, Mack asked DKR to come and evaluate how he was doing things at Tulane. DKR did. And was brutally honest afterwards.

Royal's fondness became pronounced after Mack came on board and began getting people and factions back into the fold. He was brilliant at this. And it was what Texas really needed at the time.

The next five weeks are going to be brutal and I'm not even talking about the beating we are going to get on the field.

Should we have Mack involved in the search and help vet the candidates to see if they can handle the non coaching aspect of the job.
