Time for Texas to name a starting QB

Here’s the deal. The quarterback situation at Texas is a touchy subject. It was at this time last year and it continues to be even as I write this post. Last year the Longhorns were reeling from a less-than-acceptable 5-7 2010 season in which freshman quarterback Garrett Gilbert threw 10 touchdowns and 17 interceptions (he also rushed for 5 td’s). This year we reflect on the progress made by a team that finished 8-5 while using a 2 quarterback rotation most of the season, wondering if one player has established himself as the frontrunner to begin the 2012 season. The answer is yes, but the Texas coaching staff has been reluctant to publicly name a starter. Is there an elephant in the room?

Mack Brown has consistently maintained the notion that Texas needs to have 2 quarterbacks ready to play come September and that nobody cares (from a team perspective) who is ahead in terms of performance at this point. The Spring Game took place last weekend and while both quarterbacks have work to do, it was apparent that David Ash looks more polished than Case McCoy. His mechanics and command of the offense are clearly better and his passes were crisp and “zippy” compared to McCoy’s which were a bit more erratic, mostly due to inconsistent mechanics. The Horns won’t release an official depth chart until the fall but it is expected that David Ash will be the #1 quarterback when Texas makes the depth chart public. So what’s the wait?

This Longhorn football team has the potential to be good this season. A 10-win season is very attainable, especially given the relatively friendly schedule. How the quarterback situation is handled will ultimately play a role in the success or shortcomings of this team. Economists sometimes use a term called “opportunity cost.” Opportunity cost is the sacrifice related to the second best choice available to someone who has picked among several mutually exclusive choices. Essentially, the opportunity cost of playing Case McCoy instead of David Ash could manifest itself in the form of lost football games and the hindering of practical on-field playing time in the development of David Ash. We understand Coach Brown’s diplomacy and protection of his players but the rest of the offensive players (and defensive players for that matter) need to know who the leader of this offense will be. The opportunity cost of playing two quarterbacks, in my opinion, is just too high.

Mack Brown’s comments from the Spring Game still indicate a paradigm of “two is better than one” when it comes to quarterbacks, which means it might be a long spring and summer for Texas fans – at least those waiting for a starting quarterback to be named. Throw in the fact that Texas has what seems to be a capable quarterback in freshman Connor Brewer (who will likely redshirt) and touted dual-threat quarterback and incoming freshman Jalen Overstreet, and things could get even hairier. While it is not likely, it is conceivable that it could be several years before Texas has a clear-cut consistent starting quarterback. With that being said Mack should name David Ash the starter and continue to develop all of the quarterbacks.

What elephant?

I am sure that he is thinking that if he names a starter then the starter will relax. He does not want that. He wants his players to be Hungry!

I thought about that as well but it also gives the other guy a sense of false hope - assuming their minds are already made up. I am not sure in the least bit that Mack is committed to Ash.

Name Ash and hand Case and family a box of tissues. Its business and nothing personal.

Ash, Case, Brewer. Sounds like we are running a bar instead of a football team. It is inevitable we are going to lose a quarterback or two in the next few years for whatever reason. I do agree with Mack that we need to have all our quarterbacks ready to go at all times regardless of who they are. Injuries can hit you in an instant as can transfers, etc.

Here is what I think has happened with Mack's thinking and it dates back to the National Championship Game vs Alabama. Colt gets hurt and Gilbert has to come in who is completely unprepared for the situation because Colt, who is the #1 guy, has gotten 99% of practice snaps. Move on to the next year, Gilbert is the #1 QB and struggles badly, but since he is the clear #1, no one gets reps and Texas has no one to replace him with.

Mack doesn't want to be in the situation he found himself for 2 straight years. So he has gone to the compete opposite ends of the spectrum and makes sure 2 QB's get significant reps. I understand the mind set, but the team will continue to struggle due to inconsistencies from the QB's because they lack the necessary preparation as a #1 QB. You can't play QB part-time and be successful.

I know a starter hasn't officially been named, but its Ash and everyone knows it, especially the guys on the team I think.

I'll bet you a fistful of dollars we play 2 qb's for at least the first half of the season.

I keep telling people to relax on Ash a bit.He had similar stats to Matt Stafford his true freshman year. The kid is big, strong with a good arm and will have a good grasp of running an offense under center this year.As long as Ash doesn't turn the ball over and is efficient,he'll win a lot of ball games here.

I have to agree and think the turnovers will be a deciding factor in the potential splitting of time. Ash starts turning it over then that will only give Mack more justification for the dual qb schemes.

If McCoy was a hatfield then he wouldn't be on this football team. I appreciate what his brother did but he isn't his brother. He should have transferred last year because he is not good enough to play at Texas.

He was pinned to go to Texas from the start but the other schools that offered Case a scholarship were Texas A&M, Arizona, Auburn and Colorado State. Would he be starting at any of those schools today?

He would not start at most Division 1 schools. Fact.
I'd have to agree with Hammer on this one.Case shows adequate arm strength, floats deep balls and makes bad decisions when pressured.

I have tried to remain as quiet as possible in my skepticism of Case but after the Orange-White Game it is clear that he is a backup. Coach Brown is a loyal guy and he is undoubtedly "watching out for" Case. Colt McCoy made Mack look like a genius. Had we won that national title with Colt Case McCoy may be starting for 4 years!

There is no doubt that Mack has a history of micro-managing his QB situation. Name Ash the starter and let it ride.

Is it me or does David Ash look sort of look like a smaller version of David Thomas???
