Things I'm Looking For During Spring Practice

Agree other teams figured out Buchele last year, but I also wonder how much was a product of poor offense game planning and play calling. Of course Gilbert had to coach to his frost QBs strengths as well. To reiterate complaints from last year...where are the routes up the middle in intermediate range!!!
I agree with you and echeese that a more competent OC is going to do nothing but help Shane. I could have stopped Shane as DC 5 or so games into the season. Granted, it was because I saw that the OC was not going to change the Stephenville offense. I also believe (based on what I saw of UH's offense) that Herman will provide a major upgrade offensively although I would note the importance of the running QB in the Herman/Urban Meyer offensive scheme. I do believe the O line will be improved but I expect a slight drop off at the RB productivity.

I will clarify so that you guys stop worrying about convincing me. I do not think Shane is a winning QB at this level. Texas may have a winning record but I don't believe it will be because of his stellar play. I think he is competent. In the end, I know that Texas fans do not accept competent. They want at least very good. I do not think he rises to the level of very good. I have seen enough freshman QBs to form an opinion. Shane has a plus arm, he is plenty competitive, I do not think he is tough and I do not believe that he is a leader that other players will follow. All of that said, if he surprises me and ends up outperforming what I expect from him I will admit to you that I am wrong and I will be happy to do so.

I keep reading where Shane is this tiny fragile thing that cant take a hit....but that is not what I saw last year. He looked to me like he would accecpt the hit and bounce right up. When he did get injured, it was from that damned thumb that he had had hurt since HS. Frankly, I wish he would just go ahead and have the surgery and be ready for the fall....The kid is tough.

Did you watch the Cal game? One hit and Shane was not the same QB the rest of the game.

It's not that Shane can't take a hit or isn't willing to. Kid is tough as nails. But tough as nails with that size will get you hurt. And if it's a lousy thumb injury, that in itself creates a limitation on what passes you can throw – as we saw at the end of the season.

Shane needs to add some girth to that body in the form of muscle. That way, his body goes further and performs better.
