The NFL Coach

I'm sorta wondering about the Michigan Dream Job angle as well. Hopefully Patterson would look carefully at this before extending an offer.

I'm also curious if the offer reportedly being extended today to Harbaugh is a formal contract. If so what does this mean in terms of Saban?

Sounds to me like JH is using Texas as leverage. I wonder if Michigan really is his dream job and if we hired him, would that be something to worry with down the road?
I do believe that JH would command roughly the same amount of money to come to Texas as Saban would.
I was thinking the same thing...the leverage part that is. I can't imagine if we do get JH inked that after spending time in Austin and enjoying all the resources at his disposal that he would consider leaving, especially to go back to cold Michigan and the rust belt conference.

Yes, I know that is where he grew up and his ties are, but still, have we ever had a coach leave UT for another job that did not include being fired? Not that I know of and I think there is a reason...you're backing-up if you do!

I was under the impression that it was Saban who received the offer tonight and not Harbaugh

Sounds reasonable to assume the Michigan Dream wouldn't measure up to what Texas has to offer overall. Just having trouble fitting the saban offer in to this latest development with Harbaugh.

Take a step back... and let's look at a couple of things...

1. The next level discussion with Mike Harbaugh is a potential opportunity. It's not Texas' final decision. It may not be even Texas' first option.

2. Pay special attention to the source of some of this information. Chatsports is a sports news aggregator with 'correspondents' that habitually print more rumor than fact. If one wants to take those articles at face value, that's fine... but do you really know the source.

3. If those who are still worried about the Harbaugh to Michigan rumor... there has still been no movement at all on its current coach. Chances are really good we are at least a week ahead in negotiations from anything Michigan is doing in that respect.

4. If not Saban, if not Harbaugh... Patterson is lining up those he wants the most to replace Mack Brown. And with Committee approval we will formalize something pretty quickly. What appears Patterson won't do is be caught without a viable option. We should really embrace this whole process.

My apologies, so much info going around, and trying to catch up all at once at 1-2:30 makes for some fuzzy memories. Definitely weird that it is A FACT that an offer has been drawn up for him. There is a rumor of a contract being drawn up but doesn't seem to be who it is getting sent to. Gonna be a lot more ups and downs in the next week, that is the only thing I think we know for A FACT at this point.

I'm with you...If the reported Harbaugh offer is being extended as a plan of protection I'm all in on that idea. Just curious how this will lineup with the offer to saban too.

If Saban were to accept, the Harbaugh offer doesn't happen.

If Saban says no thanks, then Harbaugh gets the offer.

Saban got his offer tonight (unconfirmed, but told it was to happen). If the game plan was to have an offer to Harbaugh by Tuesday, then that means Saban said no or Saban's deadline is by tomorrow.

I tend to agree with everything HornInOz said, above. And I do think Harbaugh would be using Texas as leverage. People love to go home. I know the economy in Michigan sucks and in the midwest in general, but the sound of that linked story told me his eyes are on Michigan. I know presentation is from a Michigan source, but look at the Harbaugh quotes.

I get the same vibe about Michigan in that article as you. But Patterson's got to be smart enough to vet this issue surely.

I like that the Saban or Harbaugh scenario is (seemingly) not dependent on waiting until after the BCS Championship game.

All other things equal, stealing the show at the BCS Championship game…

Priceless.

That chatsports.com article is a bombshell too but I don't know about it's validity
Don't know their credibility but I really hope it's true for our side. I think he'd be a damn good hire.

Do Saban got an official offer from us yet there is absolutely no report saying that we have asked permission to speak to Saban? Yeah, that's not believable considering the contract he has. No way Patterson leads us directly into a lawsuit imo.

My concern with Harbaugh is that I truly feel that his heart is in Michigan. Going home and bringing the "home team" back to an upper echelon level on the national scale. WOW….what an exhilarating and satisfying scenario. I would always have anxiety that Harbaugh would jump at an opportunity to return or go home. He didn't take it when offered a couple of years ago because he wanted to bring his NFL journey to the top of the mountain which he accomplished last year. Just my take so I am still in the SABAN CAMP!!!

I don't think you need to ask for permission for head coache only assistants (for lateral moves).

I don't get why people don't get as excited about John as they would Jim. Hell, John beat Jim at the highest level. Is John viewed as winning with someone else's players? Lewis, Reed...
