The Big 12's Exposure Problem?

There is a point made.

How do you think the nation feels about watching Iowa State, KU, TTU or even KSU play football? Sure, I know every conference has their bottom feeders, but doesn't it seem like ours are the worst? And because we are a 10 team conference, doesn't it make the Big 12, as a whole, look even worse?
that has nothing to do with what network is televising the game.

With my trusty DVR, I record the games I want to watch, wait a half hour or so, then can fast forward past the talking heads and the ads. If I am watching two games that are on at the same time, I do the same, but switch back and forth enough to avoid getting the scores of the other.

May be silly, but I really dislike the pure BS we get from the studios, and the ads.

Some days it takes some juggling, but it works for me.

It has everything to do with what game a network feels is attractive enough to go national or regional with - or televise at all.
hardly any games are NOT televised. And most ARE national but have competition from a half dozen other games.
What exactly is the beef here? We don't like Fox? We don't like the conference? We don't like analysts?

Me? I don't like 6-7. Everything else is white noise.

Iowa State vs Kansas

Vanderbilt vs Kentucky

Indiana vs Rutgers

Washington State vs Utah

Wake Forest vs NC State

None of those games has national appeal. They're of regional interest inside the conference's footprint, at best.

What network they're on; Who the on-air talent is; What time the game is on; etc are all irrelevant.

It also has everything to do with why it's important to this conference for teams like Texas and OU to be strong and successful.

TCU and Baylor were impressive as hell last year and still couldn't get in. TCU won by 50 on the day they were moved out by Ohio St.

That wouldn't happen to Texas or OU. OU got into the MNC after losing the conference championship game one year. That would never happen to TCU or Baylor.

I've never been impressed with anything Fox Sports has done when it comes to college football. Don't like their announcers or studio show. My only reason to watch Fox is the game period. Rather watch ESPN for college football news and scores.

Precisely.  In our little conference, the two big dogs are still UT and OU.  It's easy to go to the different conferences and count the alpha males.  Sixteen team conferences just have more than 10 team conferences.

That's why I think the value and power of a conference resides with the mid-level and lower level teams.  The big dogs will always be the big dogs, but the rest of the conference must carry their own weight.  Losing Nebraska, Missouri and aggy hurt the Big 12 - and there is no denying it.

The networks simply aren't that excited about a game like ISU vs. TTU.  They much prefer a Mississippi State vs. Tennessee or Nebraska vs. Iowa.

Were there a lot of featured games involving Tennessee or Florida or Arkansas the last few years other than when the played a highly ranked opponent? Those are big name schools who've been afterthoughts on the natl stage.

Matts list of seemingly nondescript games above was perfect. Every league has a bunch of nobody cares match ups. But if any of the games he listed matched up two 9-0 teams, it would be the ABC prime time Saturday game.

Nebraska vs. Iowa.
You had me until this. I would rather watch grass grow than watch a Big 10 game, outside of OSU or MSU.

If you look at the teams that left, only Mizzou has really parlayed that into success. Aggy has done no better than they did with the Big 12. Colorado fell off the football map entirely. Nebraska is still fighting for second or first in a division, or the right to be beaten by OSU in the CCG. Same as it was in the Big 12.

While the Big 12 surely misses those teams, I don't think any of them are feeling real smart right now. Outside Mizzou.

Nationally the Big 12 is Texas and OU.

That's what makes the SEC the best conference, they have more teams that are recognized nationally. Not because they are SO much better athletically. That's why I'm not bothered by people saying the SEC is the best conference. What bothers me is the level of bias that is presented by ESPN week in and week out giving bottom feeders more credibility than they deserve
See, you just said they're the best conference, yet you acknowledge the $EC media/ESPN bias which inflates their perception. In reality, they only have 2-4 teams outta 14 which are consistently TEXAS/ou (former) caliber.

The SEC is the best conference but they also have an inflated perception. It's a little of both. The level that the media takes it is absurd. They act like SEC teams are unbeatable. I definitely don't agree with that. My opinions do not contradict themselves

Of course.  Exactly my point.

I do agree with J.B. - I don't really care who televises the game as long as I get to see it.  I, also, prefer it is always televised as a national headliner - even though I know that will never be the case.  Even Notre Dame never enjoyed that kind of exposure.

All this being said, forgive me for constantly de-railing the thread, but exposure is wholly dependent on the quality of the televised game.

Until our bottom feeders are on a parallel with the likes of ASU, MSU, aggy, Cal, Wiscy, etc., etc., we will never get the network respect we need.

TCU and Baylor will never be "on parallel" to large state universities in the eyes of advertisers or the TV networks.

Their alumni and fan bases are too small in number.
