FINAL: Oklahoma State 6 – Texas 3

Corey Hassel hit a three-run, walk-off homerun in the bottom of the eighteenth inning to give Oklahoma State a 6-3 win. Notably, in the extended game that saw a total of 18 pitchers used by the two clubs, Hassel was also the game’s winning pitcher.

The story of the game is told in the teams’ 27 combined hits only resulting in a 3-3 tie through 17 innings. Both clubs steadily missed opportunities throughout the night. Despite extra outs from six combined defensive errors, three called balks, and 17 total walks, both teams failed to capitalize on offensive opportunities throughout the game. A total of 39 runners were left on base (20 by Texas).

Oklahoma State scored a game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth frame with help from the Horns. A two-out walk to the ninth batter in the order (Jacob Chappell) combined with another walk and an RBI single led to the run.

The Cowboys led for the first seven innings of the contest, but Texas scored two runs in the top of the eighth frame to take a brief lead. The only other Texas run came from an unearned run on a passed ball in the top of the third stanza.

The top of the 14th inning was a capsule of the entire night for the Longhorns. The hitters rallied for three hits and the Cowboys contributed a fielding errors, but a Tres Barrera baserunning blunder and two strikeouts resulted in no runs and three runners left on base.

Ty Marlow put forth a valiant effort, entering the game in the bottom of the thirteenth inning. Marlow battled for 4.1 IP, holding OSU scoreless, while giving the Texas offense time to pull off the win. The Longhorns used nine pitchers, with Andy McGuire taking the loss when he allowed the homerun by Hassel.

Texas and Oklahoma State play Game 2 on Saturday evening at 6:30PM (Central). The game will be televised on ESPNU.

POST-GAME

Augie Garrido

On Game 1: â€œIt’s a matter of converting the opportunities. They finally did that.”

On how the team can turn it around before Game 2: â€œWe will put it behind. We played a long, hard competitive game – there were plenty of things not done right by both sides, but that’s baseball.”

Tough loss but heroic effort by everyone, especially you guys that stuck it out. I fell asleep in the 12th, woke up in the 15th and then fell asleep for good in the 17th. They lost a doubleheader tonight but it only counts as one L.

I saw the 25 inning affair with BC a few years back and I just couldn't manage this one.

I never thought I would say this bit I'm beginning to question the baseball IQ and testicular fortitude of this team. I'm not jumping off the bandwagon yet, but there are some things beginning to distress me.

I think you have to at least question it at this point. My biggest concern is that I don't see player ownership on the team yet. When Thornhill & Payton came back last year, they held the locker room accountable for themselves. I don't see anyone doing that this year.

It doesn't matter how much Garrido yells, or how many zen-like stories he gives the team for anecdotal evidence. Unless the team believes and understands that they are the only ones responsible for their performance, it doesn't matter.

Just ask Rick Barnes.

the ridiculous meltdown by mayes in the ninth subjected his teammates to nine extra innings with a terrible outcome for the effort.  i have to admit, i only saw part of it, but the part i saw, sucked.  nine innings of nuthin'.

this team reminds me of the team two years ago.  nothing falls in, line drives are snared just off the grass, nobody can hit with runners in scoring position.  this team just seems snakebit.  the morgan cooper TJ surgery has impacted this team way more than i hoped.

this really isn't on augie entirely, I don't think because the players need to show some leadership, but why he continues to stick with certain players without at least trying some of the younger ones baffles me.

is Kaleb Denny injured?   his father had a better career at Texas than Kacy's did.  and he hit 440 in high school.  if he's not hurt, can we get the kid a few at bats at DH?  you know, just to kind of see if we can get somebody home from second?

this game tonight is a must win.  period.

I agree Slim, tonight is absolutely must win. I've never been one to panic, is a long season, but it can run of the rails in a hurry. This team should be Hinojosa's like last year's was Mark Payton's. Im not trying to throw him under the yellow dog but he had been starting for 3 years and he can't even sniff a pinch hit in an 18 inning marathon. Barrera gets picked of at second because he's lackadaisical. Again multi year starter and all American candidate.

No this doesn't fall on the head coach or the hitting guy or the pitching coach. This falls on the group that are playing like they don't give a F@#K.
