Carlton: In recruiting frenzy unlike any other, Texas gets exactly what it needed

AUSTIN -- The Texas football program needed what happened Wednesday.

So did coach Charlie Strong after back-to-back losing seasons. And judging from social media, so did a large number of Longhorn fans desperately hoping for good recruiting news.

By the end of a frenzied national signing day for Texas unlike any in recent memory, the Longhorns had put together the No. 11 class in the 247Sports team composite. The actual ranking wasn't special by school standards. Texas was regularly in the top 10 during the Mack Brown era. Strong's class last season was ranked 10th before defections and academics took a toll.

It was the dramatic way Texas put it together. The Longhorns entered Wednesday ranked 25th before making a move as a dominos began to fall. When the final national letter of intent was signed, Texas had won seven high-stakes battles for uncommitted recruits.

Among them: Three consensus top 100 recruits in Nacogdoches safety Brandon Jones, Manor outside linebacker/defensive end Erick Fowler and Houston Davis outside linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch.

Texas emerged from a three-way recruiting battle with Texas A&M and Baylor for Jones, flipped Fowler from LSU and outlasted A&M, Stanford and Notre Dame for McCulloch. All filled Strong's checklist for defensive help.

"We needed some positive vibes just because the way we ended the season and didn't play well," Strong said. "There was so much negative energy around the program. You try to dispel it ... Just looking at the national exposure, the way it just took off.

"Everybody kept saying, 'What's happening in Austin, look what's happening in Austin.'"

Despite wins over Baylor and Big 12 champ Oklahoma, Texas has finished 5-7 and failed to reach a bowl. Strong had overhauled his offense staff after the season, bringing in new coordinator Sterlin Gilbert. The inevitable quarterback question surfaced about the unsettled position with Strong acknowledging that Arlington Lamar recruit Shane Buechele "will have the chance to compete" this spring.

Texas had just 12 commitments in mid-January as Baylor and TCU racked up impressive classes after already passing the Longhorns on the field the past couple of seasons.

The momentum began early with Duncanville defensive tackle Marcel Southall and Euless Trinity defensive tackle Chris Daniels signing with Texas. Each had strongly considered Oklahoma, making the recruiting win sweeter.

"All I've got to say is that if you don't want to go to Texas, don't let [strong] get on your couch because that man is very persuasive," Daniels said. "He's like an uncle to me. Uncle Charlie, for real."

Tom Luginbill, ESPN's national scouting director, also noted the stretch drive.

"What Texas was hoping to happen, is starting to happen," Luginbill said. "It is about closing down the stretch."

Strong downplayed his contribution, praising his players for selling the program. Texas linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator Brian Jean-Mary referred to sophomore linebacker Malik Jefferson as the "mayor of Austin."

But Strong set the tone with his strategy and bonding with recruits. He went back for seconds on pancakes while visiting Fowler's house and showed his knowledge of TV westerns chatting with the grandmother of defensive tackle Jordon Elliott. His daughter, Hope, even gave him pointers on how to Dab after an awkward moment with Daniels in recruiting.

While some schools bask in their commitments, Strong didn't pressure recruits for a decision and even told them not to announce their decisions. He feared other schools would immediately target them with negative recruiting.

"After the season we had, I didn't want them attacking us," Strong said.

It all paid off. Of the 32 recruits who took official visits, 24 committed, a high batting average.

"It was a great day today. A great finish," Strong said. "This was a big step forward for our program.

"The drama today, I liked it. We needed everyone's attention on our program."

Just watched that and was coming over here to post it. Really happy to have this guy lining up for us. Just a great talent with his head on straight. Destined for great things.

I have to give TexAgs some credit, it's pretty well made. And I felt it was fairly unbias as well. Even if it did place a bit of emphasis on his relationship with A&M. Worth the watch.

Mosley: Longhorns' remarkable Signing Day shelves A&M's 'We Run This State' mantra

The Boys of February have returned. The Texas Longhorns embarrassed all the doomsayers with a stirring finish that saw them leap from 33rd to 10th on National Signing Day.

Turns out Charlie Strong was playing opossum on us the whole time. He hosted a large group of recruits in Austin the weekend of Jan. 15 and then nearly reeled everyone one of them in Wednesday. It's hard to blame him for puffing his chest a bit.

"I wanted everyone's attention on our program, and that's what we got today," Strong told reporters.

Of course, none of it means anything if the Horns don't find a suitable quarterback. (Why doesn't anyone transfer to Austin?) But at least it shuts up the haughty recruiting analyst who recently told Chuck Carlton the Big 12 was getting its "butt handed to it" in recruiting. Strong kept reminding folks that signing day wasn't until Feb. 3, but everyone wanted to call it early. This was our state's version of the Iowa caucus. But unlike Hillary Clinton, Strong wasn't waiting until midnight to claim victory.

He desperately needed this "win" for the perception of the program. It shouldn't be a shock for the Horns to finish in front of Baylor and TCU because that's been the case forever. Art Briles and Gary Patterson know what they're looking for and don't need validation from Rivals.com.

For the Horns, winning a battle with Texas A&M over Nacogdoches safety Brandon Jones and finishing a few spots ahead of them sends the message that Kevin Sumlin's "We Run This State" mantra needs to be temporarily shelved. Unlike Mack Brown, Strong didn't press for early commitments.

"I tell them I don't need a commitment right now, go visit wherever you want to," Strong said. "We're still going to be here."

It's pretty remarkable that Strong put this class together when there's so much speculation about his future. It's part of the reason finding a top-flight offensive coordinator was no easy task. I think Sumlin's uncertain future probably played a role in the Aggies not pulling in a higher-rated class. The abrupt firing of athletic director Eric Hyman was something that I'm told worried Sumlin greatly when it comes to the perception of his coaching staff. He now inherits an AD from Washington who doesn't have any loyalty to him beyond that large buyout.

Both the Aggies and Horns have quarterback issues heading into the 2016 season. Sumlin's most important "recruit," Trevor Knight, was backing up Baker Mayfield last season. Strong said Wednesday that early enrollee freshman quarterback Shane Buechele will compete for the starting job.

The Aggies have generated so much more buzz than the Longhorns since joining the SEC and renovating Kyle Field. On Wednesday, the Horns finally had a response.

Both programs are still chasing the Bears, Frogs - and yes, the Cougars - in on-field production. But Charlie pulled a fast one on everyone Wednesday.

Perhaps the Ags can blame the Longhorn Network?

National reaction: Charlie Strong, Longhorns find success on national signing day, Jordan Spieth celebrates

The Longhorns had furious recruiting finish, which led them to finish the 2016 recruiting class with a top 15 class.

Here are some reactions from the Longhorns' big national signing day:

Kirk Bohls, Austin American-Statesman: "Texas now has itself a new Coach February. And that works because the original one won a national championship and produced a Heisman Trophy winner, a couple of Rose Bowl wins and the most high-water moments in school history in 40 years. Even if Strong and Mack Brown don't do it alike. Brown would have his next class near full before the first kickoff in September whereas Strong doesn't get serious about it until the last tackle in December. (Or November, if there's no bowl game.)"

Erik McKinney, ESPN: "Texas had a huge day, as the Longhorns jumped 22 spots and landed in the top 10 of the class rankings. That was made possible in large part by a strong finish in the state, as four of the Lone Star State's top 20 prospects announced commitments to Texas ... It will be interesting to see if the Longhorns need to show improvement on the field this year in order to further get recruits to buy into the vision again next signing day."

Cedric Golden, Austin American-Statesman: "On a day when the Horns could have well crashed and burned, Strong's class was a feel-good moment. To steal a line from rap legend Kool Moe Dee, Strong was the one standing at the podium at Moncrief-Neuhaus with a look on his face that asked, "How ya like me now?" Let's not get too far ahead ourselves, Longhorn Nation. But we can safely say that hope is back on the table."

Bruce Feldman, Fox Sports: "Texas became the story of Signing Day, closing the 2016 signing class with a flurry like UT never had before. For years when Mack Brown signed all those Top 5 classes, there never was much Signing Day drama or intrigue. This year, though, was much, much different. Charlie Strong generated as much buzz as anyone in the recruiting world this week, and especially early Wednesday morning."

Kevin McGuire, NBC Sports: "For all the criticisms Charlie Strong has been on the receiving end of during his brief time as head coach of the Texas Longhorns, his process appears to be working according to plan. For the second straight season, Texas will land the Big 12's top-rated recruiting class, including one of the two five-star players in the Big 12's Class of 2016."
