Summer is officially here! Blue skies and scorching hot weather fill the Central Texas days. It's also the most unbearable time if you are a sports fan. The Texas Longhorns athletic season is over and Major league Baseball is the only 1 of the 4 major sports still playing. That's leave sports fans 2 full months of just regular season baseball and meaningless NFL preseason games before Labor Day weekend and the start of College football. How can a sports fan survive this? Here's a few tips for summer survival.
1. Plan some outdoor activities.
In the age of air conditioning, smartphones and tablets; it's hard to stay unconnected. However, you will need something to distract you from the dog days of summer with not much in regards to sports entertainment. Go fishing, go kayaking in Lady Bird Lake, have a picnic under a tree, visit a national or state park . And put your cellphone away in your pocket, get away from it all and enjoy the outdoors. The world is a beautiful place, go see it!
2. Watch Soccer.
Yes, Soccer. The World Cup only comes around every 4 years. The USA is in the toughest group but learn the nuisances of the game. Who knows, maybe you'll learn more about the world's most popular sport and the cultures of the countries the USA is playing. The MLS is still playing this summer and is quickly becoming one of the most popular leagues in America. Go to an FC Dallas or Houston Dynamo game. Even if you don't fully understand the game, learn the chants and immerse yourself in the atmosphere. With the rapid rate of growth, soccer might just challenge football for sports supremacy in the USA.
3. Get a summer reading list together.
Whether it's to improve on a skill for work or just for leisure, there is nothing better than sitting in the shade reading a good book. Go to the public library and learn about new things that you didn't know before. Knowledge is power.
No matter what you do to pass the time, keep it here to Horn Sports as we give detailed previews of each football game this fall and other stories to keep you satisfied!
