SignUp Now!^^^THIS^^^If he loses the rest of his games in TCU fashion - then he won't be back. But we don't have anymore games against TCU, so I'm not particularly worried. The Longhorns have played the second toughest schedule in the NCAA and have done it with a team that started 8 freshman. They've played the #2, #10, #14, and #22 offenses in the NCAA. They've played against one of the most veteran teams in college (Notre Dame), and two Heisman Trophy finalist QB's. They've had absolutely no breaks, and they're doing it with a team devoid of any veteran talent or leadership. Strong and especially Bedford were upfront about this all summer long - you don't win with Freshman, but they're the best players we've got.
These aren't excuses - but they are explanations for why Texas is 1-4 right now.
The upside to Charlie Strong is the same today as it was the day he was hired. He is an excellent evaluator of talent (see his recruiting results at Louisville), has consistently fielded outstanding defenses, and is a coach who truly believes in developing these athletes into students and men. And they (and I) believe he will win.
I don't think FIRE is the problem. I don't think they can "COACH"....The are good at rah rah, " Get physical, etc,etc.....they know what it is supposed to look like, they just can't teach the players what to do to get them to look like what it is supposed to looks like...I agree. In order for Strong to save his career he needs to find a way to reignite the fire inside his staff. They have to transform into better teachers of fundamentals. I hope there is a way to salvage the year. Starting from scratch again is not appealing
i think the problem with the "can't coach" argument is strong's record at louisville; wickline's reputation at OSU.I don't think FIRE is the problem. Its like they know what to do they just can't teach it to the players. THAT or we have some ignorant kids at Texas. One or the other....Cause by game 5 we should look better than this.
I know a lot of coaches who can kick your butt on a chalk board, but put them out on the field with players and they can't coach worth a darn. We may have that situation.... there are a lot of smart people, but put them in front of a classroom and they cannot TEACH. Its the same with coaching.
Bear! Give GBT a break ... at least he knows how to repeat himself ad naseam!I doubt GBT knows any coaches above the T-ball level.
I would like to see what Traylor can doWho are the potential OC candidates that Charlie could bring in? We need one that can impact recruiting TODAY.
It's just my humble opinion, but we could do much, much better than Traylor and Norvell if we really do end up looking for a new OC next year.I would like to see what Traylor can do
Maybe so ... but let's see how the season plays out first. It's just my humble opinion, but we could do much, much better than Traylor and Norvell if we really do end up looking for a new OC next year.
I know folks want someone to yell at. They'd love to yell at Charlie, ridicule him, etc., so they find that those who aren't as pissed off, pretend they're Charlie's support staff, and vent away.
I understand, I was rather bothered a little too much earlier.
DKR didn't just drop out of the sky and start winning. Neither did Mack. Mack, IMO, committed worse offenses. He pooped all over the Cotton Bowl multiple times.
As Chris said above, you can't fire Charlie. That would make things much worse now and in the long term. Charlie is a great coach. Let's give him a chance to be great. What else are you going to do? Good thing we didn't get so worked up that we fired DKR in year 2.
I agree with the thoughts shared here that say Charlie didn't have this team well prepared for TCU. But we've seen worse. We've seen cowering in the Cotton Bowl. We've been accused of being afraid, timid, soft, yada yada yada. That doesn't happen anymore. We're tough. We're fighting. But we're young.
Kris Boyd – that's who he is. Unfortunately, you saw the ugly part of Boyd today. I don't like it. I'd bench him. But a kid who literally had his way with his opposition for the past 4 years and was accustomed to winning, winning, and winning – he's having a hard time digesting this losing thing. Especially losing bad. IMO, you want a kid who can't stomach losing. But no, you don't circumvent and betray the coach, the team, the program in the locker room at half time. We'll see how Charlie handles this and how the kid responds.
he also says "Allot of it is the truth" about the Criticism Mack is gettingSo a guy who played for and was recruited by Mack, and spent only one year under Strong, says 'the place was a mess' under Mack and supports Strong. Isn't that interesting.
he's probably right.I'm not in favor of firing Charlie Strong, but a couple more blow-out losses like the TCU fiasco will be more than disappointing.
"Texas should never have a 6-7 record and it won't happen again while I'm head coach" - Charlie Strong
I don't think I've quoted him verbatim, but it was something along those lines in a LHN interview after the Texas Bowl.
JB, I think we will be fortunate to win 4 games this year unless something close to a miracle happens and the OL and the defense get better. However this season goes, I think Charlie should have the opportunity to get the program in order.I'm not in favor of firing Charlie Strong, but a couple more blow-out losses like the TCU fiasco will be more than disappointing.

Every coach needs the material to work with. If it is not there, nobody can work magic. Another good recruiting year and some experience and maturity from the last two classes should get us respectable again.
A championship is two years away.
At my age, I should not be counseling patience, but that is what we must have.
