Aaron Carrara:
The Texas defense has yet to prove they can stop opponent offenses,
and Cal brings a pass-happy one to Austin on Saturday. Golden Bears
quarterback Jared Goff will test the Texas secondary early and
frequently. The offensive playbook for Texas has been significantly
trimmed to fit Jerrod Heard's strengths. Heard will take advantage of
a Cal defense that is less than stellar.
Texas wins a close one due to turnovers and another solid performance
by the special teams unit, maintaining a perfect record against Cal.
Score Prediction: Texas - 42, Cal - 38
Jon Nemec:
Going off the Rice game I think we all saw a lot of good, and we all saw a lot of bad. There is lots of room for growth for this young Texas team. How young are they you might ask, they played 20 freshmen against Rice. We saw Jerrod run, and throw some. We know he can run, now lets see what he is really made of as a passer. I think the game plan should be to test the Cal secondary early and often. Also I want to see if Texas can run the ball better against this not very good Cal defense. Look for Gray to try to get more and more carries, and hopefully the offensive line can keep getting better week-by-week and improve the run game.
On the Cal side they have a very potent offense, and a very talented quarterback in Jared Goff. Goff is possibly playing himself into a very high NFL draft pick this year. This Texas defense and defensive line is going to have to get pressure on him and make him uncomfortable. With that pressure they are going to have to be very disciplined because Goff is very good at avoiding pressure.
Look for the Texas offense to expand on Jerrod’s potential, get the running game going early and often, and hope that the defense can make Goff uncomfortable and force a turnover or two.
Score Prediction: Texas wins: 48 to 45.

It's difficult to feel too confident about this game. The Texas defense has struggled through the first two weeks of the season and has shown issues generating a pass rush and maintaining coverage in the secondary. Cal quarterback Jared Goff is ready to feast on an inconsistent secondary laden with young players. Texas will look to build on the momentum Jerrod Heard generated last week in his first start. Texas will need to minimize mistakes while sustaining long drives to keep the Golden Bears off the field. It also wouldn't hurt to get some more help from their special teams this week. In the end I think It's a shootout that Texas comes up short in due to lack of firepower.
Score Prediction: Cal - 41 Texas - 37
Chris Flanagan:
After a better performance against Rice, the Longhorns take on a very good Cal team. The Bad News? Cal is ranked 13th in total offense. The Good News? That was against Grambling State and San Diego State. Traveling to Texas and playing the Texas Longhorns will be a step up. Now that we know Jerrod Heard has this offense, we can expect playmaking ability out of him. Cal's defense is ranked 44th, against bad competition (San Diego State is 114th in total offense).
There are too many unknowns, which makes the -6.5 line very tempting but I would stay away from it. And the end of the day, Jared Goff will rip this secondary apart and the Longhorns will go 1-2 in non-conference play for the 3rd season in a row.
Score Prediction:
Cal wins 52-35
