So if NS really wanted to be at Texas, and the BMDs were really offering the huge oil & gas package to make him whole from the bad investments, why re-up on Friday night? Why not just wait until after the weekend to see how things shake out? By all accounts, most figured that Mack would not resign before or during the banquet in order to honor the kids. And most also figured that NS would not want to make such a huge move before or during the Heisman ceremony so as to honor AJ.

Thus the timeline was on track (Mack resigning over the weekend and NS announced on Mon/Tues) according to what McPhaul and others had shared.

This makes me think that either NS had a change of heart (not that he was ticked at some delaying by Mack) or that he is actually still in play.

I mean how easy would it be to say, "Everything I said about wanting to retire at Alabama was true, but then the Texas opening happened and I just could not turn it down."

Thoughts?

I've thought about it but then I move on. I woke up on Friday feeling uneasy about all of it. I was right

Mack wouldn't leave until Saban was out of the picture, Saban is "out of the picture", Mack steps down, Saban is home free to come to Texas.

Think about it from Saban's perspective. He says he doesn't want to be the reason Mack is forced out. While the words are coming out of his mouth, Mack is trashing his integrity and cock-blocking him from the Texas job and then once Saban seems out of the picture, Mack steps down. What did Mack think he knew about Saban that he wanted to keep him out of the Texas job so badly, because Mack seriously fu@ked Saban.

My personal opinion is that Saban was never the real possibility that a lot of people portrayed him to be. That's just me though.

Because Saban knew that Mack Brown was NOT going to re-sign until Nick Saban had gone public with another Bama extension.

Remember, Saban inherited a mess at LSU from Gerry Dinardo and had LSU as the NC winner in four years, then after the Dolphins stint, Saban resurrected Bama.

Mack Brown did not want to be looked at as the guy who lost a pile of games pre-Saban.

McPhaul did offer us some early warnings on this but few paid heed.

yeah...at this point, it would feel sort of gross to get him if he could lie so blatantly about all of his intentions. i would rather him keep his word to Alabama and take our shot with one of the other great candidates.

@BarkingCarnival ‏

This is going to be great when Nick Saban is photographed tomorrow eating a Trailer Park Trashy Style @TorchyTaco.

...personally, i believe that nick saban became a bit nervous that mack brown would undoubtably unveil to the media, that nick saban was negotiating faithfully with texas, in lieu of him not yet resigning...

As stated by others, Saban does not want Mack around meddling. I think Mack and Powers/Patterson agreed to let Mack stay in the AD in a role that will conflict with Saban's initial requests.

That being said, I honestly think Saban is still in play until he actually signs his extension, pen to paper. It's Texas.

Exactly. But let's not muck this up again. We won't hear a peep about anything Saban until after the Alamo Bowl. They learned their lesson last night. Unless Texas hires someone different before the Bowl.

This exactly. His credibility was being put through the ringer, people couldn't shut up about how he left MS, LSU and Miami- tolerable enough until one of college football's biggest powerhouses threatens to dog you in the media. Plus, what a clusterf##k. Even the notoriously scandalous Nick Saban wanted nothing to do with a crew of misfits who couldn't pull it together long enough to drown out MB and JJ. These balls should've been rolling halfway through the season, he should've been given marching orders after BYU. But, I digress.

ETA: No way Saban is still in play. He's out.

I think Saban is still in play for a lot of reasons:

1. Mack has left on his own accord (officially) and is no longer in any position to stand in the way.

2. There's still the matter of a $5.7 mil home he just purchased.

3. The UT offer dwarfs his Bama contract and it's a known fact he lost plenty of money on investments.

4. He has friends among the BMD's who have offered investment deals.

5. He would be a splash hire and he knows TX is a big time recruiters paradise and he would have a blank check to hire coaches.

6. Ego. One of his main motivating factors in leaving Bama was to become the first coach to win Natty's at 3 different schools!

7. I'm sure I may have left something else out but my main reason for thinking that he is still in play is this: I have read a couple of times that his new contract has no buy-out clause. This had to be his decision and not Bama's. I am sure that Bama would have wanted a hefty buy-out to be a part of such a large extension. This means that there is nothing to stop him from leaving at any time. The scenario would play out like this: He continually down plays any real interest in TX while everything dies down and it becomes clear that he had no actual part in Macks retirement. He waits and lets Sexton negotiate an even better deal with the BMD's who now want him more than ever (forbidden fruit). With new deal in hand he pleads his case that he never wanted to leave but the offer was just too great to turn down. Say what you want but there are just too many reasons why it still could happen!
