McCombs, on what Patterson hire means for Mack Brown: "I think Mack is back until he decides to retire, and that's the way it should be."

From the twitter feed of Mike Finger.

Just never bought the Mack is a dead man walking or the Saban to Austin. It just never had a feel to it.

I want Mack gone, but if we don't get the specific person we want and that Patterson signs off on, we have no choice but to wait.

There is going to be a lot of disinformation and smoke. I don't have any inside info but have noticed there is a lot of misdirection.

First of all, this is exactly what I would expect Red to say in public and is consistant with all of his public statements in the past. Remember that he is still personal friends with Mack, and also remember that smokescreens wil be delivered by both Belmont and BMD's from here until the coaching hire. That being said, also remember that Mack will not be fired (at least publicly); it will be announced that he has retired (for whatever reason he chooses). This statement is in line with all of that. Something to consider, but I will let McPhaul chime in.

I talked to Red last spring. I asked him about Mack and he segued that into a story when he owned the Vikings. He said that he was the one that called Randy Moss and had told him that he'd been traded. He said that despite his antics for a number of years, Moss had the respect of the team and that they always wanted him on the team. Then all of a sudden, something changed. On that particular year, for whatever reason, he did something/a series of things that he couldn't just put his finger on exactly what, but Moss had lost the locker room. He said when you do that, whether you're on a team or in business...You're done. He said that Randy called him every name in the book and that he'd make him regret the trade. Red said that he loved him like a son and that he wished him well, but he felt it was in the best interest of everybody involved that they'd part ways. Said he was happy that Randy won the super bowls and wished it could have been that way in Minnesota...But he had no regrets about how things went down.

I think of that conversation when I hear he is backing Mack. I realize they are great friends...But after him saying those words, I think he knows it's time. He just wishes his buddy would realize it.

Then again, it might all be smoke or...He might have just been blowing smoke up my ass for a good story.

Regardless, it was a good story.

Let me help you all out with that quote. Mack is going to decide to retire when Patterson tells him he's about to be fired. So Red is correct.

With the way the team has bounced back, its hard to say Mack has lost the locker room.

BINGO (if he does not voluntarily retire). Mack is not coming back and Red knows that

I agree. Don't want to hire just anyone. Needs to be a "home run"; Saban, Meyer, Tomlin, Carroll, Fisher...who else?
