I talked to Red last spring. I asked him about Mack and he segued that into a story when he owned the Vikings. He said that he was the one that called Randy Moss and had told him that he'd been traded. He said that despite his antics for a number of years, Moss had the respect of the team and that they always wanted him on the team. Then all of a sudden, something changed. On that particular year, for whatever reason, he did something/a series of things that he couldn't just put his finger on exactly what, but Moss had lost the locker room. He said when you do that, whether you're on a team or in business...You're done. He said that Randy called him every name in the book and that he'd make him regret the trade. Red said that he loved him like a son and that he wished him well, but he felt it was in the best interest of everybody involved that they'd part ways. Said he was happy that Randy won the super bowls and wished it could have been that way in Minnesota...But he had no regrets about how things went down.
I think of that conversation when I hear he is backing Mack. I realize they are great friends...But after him saying those words, I think he knows it's time. He just wishes his buddy would realize it.
Then again, it might all be smoke or...He might have just been blowing smoke up my ass for a good story.
Regardless, it was a good story.
