Who: Texas Longhorns 6-7 (5-4) (2014) vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 8-5 (2014)

When: Saturday September 5th, 2015 at 6:30 PM Central

Where: Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, IN (NBC)

Odds: Notre Dame -10

The Good:

To start, Notre Dame comes into the season with one of the most experienced teams in recent memory.  With a total of 18 returning starters on both sides of the ball, the Irish have playoff aspirations coming into the season.  The Notre Dame running game is built around a stable of productive running backs.  While the Irish did lose Greg Bryant to academics, they return Tarean Folston who averaged 5.1 yards per carry last season.  Folston was benched during a game against Arizona State for his failures in blitz pickup, but head coach Brian Kelly lauded the work he put in to get better and become a feature back.  Notre Dame also returns junior receiver William Fuller who tallied over 1,000 yards last season.  On defense, Notre Dame returns their full front seven including stud linebackers Jaylon Smith and Joe Schmidt.  Look for the Irish to try to win by ground and pound against a re-built Texas defensive line, while trying to frustrate Tyrone Swoopes and the Texas offense.

The Bad:

On the field, Notre Dame was suspect against the pass last season, and things aren't looking much better going into this season.  Unfortunately for Texas there are questions at quarterback and receiver that could prevent them from exploiting a suspect pass defense.  Notre Dame has made more news off the field this offseason for issues with players like Greg Bryant on academic suspension, and Ishaq Williams being denied a waiver to return to the team after the academic scandal several players were caught up in.  Texas also lost some defensive line depth when Kolin Hill chose to transfer this summer.

The Uncertain:

Like Texas, Notre Dame has questions at the quarterback position.  While the supporting cast around Irish quarterback Malik Zaire is better than what Tyrone Swoopes has, the junior signal caller is still an unknown.  Zaire has talent running the ball, but is relatively unproven as a passer.  If Zaire can prove to be a competent passer who takes care of the ball he will be supported by a cast of productive offensive players, and protected by a very good offensive line which could lead the Irish into the playoff picture.

What's at Stake:

For Notre Dame, the goal is a playoff run.  A Notre Dame fan realistically told me that in this matchup he would be surprised if Notre Dame didn't win by double digits.  Notre Dame is looking to take care of business and move on to the next objective.  While the pressure is on Notre Dame, Texas could get things going in the right direction and really springboard their young confidence over an upset in South Bend.  The bigger picture is two two blue blood programs among the leaders in all time wins facing off in a prime time night game.  All eyes will be on this game, and both schools can make an impression with recruits by playing well on Saturday.

Shiro Davis, Poona Ford and Desmond Jackson all said they think Notre Dame is probably overlooking Texas and the strength of UT's D-line:

"Very possibly," Jackson said.

"Yes, based off of last year," Ford said.

Asked if the Texas defense can contain ND's running QB Malik Zaire, Jackson smiled and said, "We'll see Saturday."

Ford said DL coach Brick Haley has told the D-line Zaire "is a running back playing quarterback."

When asked for one word to describe the Texas defense, Tank Jackson said, "Hungry."

I don't expect Texas to win this game.

Texas keeps the game 7 pt difference and scores 21 pts, Texas has played a good game.

Texas isn't able to score more than 10 pts and gets beat by 14 or worse, it will be a tough way to start the season.

Not understanding your prediction: does Texas score 21 or 10?
Re-read your post, two scenarios given with one being a "positive" loss ( if that exists!) and one a negative loss. Got it.

A positive loss can exist in this game !
Playing well and at 100% is definitely a win for this team regardless of the score. Gotta keep building confidence and experience this season. Still looking for a positive win my friend!

Among a number of key parts of this game, the 2 biggest for the Horns IMHO:

1. OL success

2. Defense must impose it's will on ND

The most important thing for winning this game is for special teams to be able to supply some sort of a return game so the offense doesn't have to start from a precarious position early. We have to factor in the possibility the offense might take a series or two to get going. If I am Brian Kelly, I am going to assume Watson will play run and short pass for the first two series.

If Kelly can force a couple of three-and-outs, and UT yet again this year can't return a punt, just playing field position against UT slowly strangles the Horns by making them start deeper and deeper in their own territory. If ND goes up 10-0 early, the Horns are in trouble because Swoopes will not be able to beat ND with the deep ball and the Horns are not a team that will be able to play catch-up. If Texas gets behind and Swoopes has to start pressing to make big plays, turnovers will kill us.

Special teams has to be able to return punts to take away Kelly's ability to play field position and to also allow Watson some room to mix up the play calling to keep ND's defense honest. From there it is a matter of the O-line to open some holes so the Horns can at least get back-to-back first downs on a couple of early drives. Given those two things, it becomes a coaches game of adjustments and counter-adjustments.

Optimally, ND gets the ball first, the Horns hold them and we get 15-20 yds on an early punt return. Worst case (assuming no catastrophes), we get the ball first, lose 5 yards on two inept running plays, incomplete on third down and we get sucked into an early game of field position. If this turns into a shoot-out or a defensive struggle where field position wins the game, Texas is in trouble.

Good assessment Roach. Notre Dame is favored for a reason as they should be but this team isn't without questions themselves.

Zaire making only his second career start.... a true freshman returning punts....

Should be a fun one to watch.

If swoops can simply move the ball then we will win. I don't care what the Irish have on offense. with the inexperience at QB for the Irish, I have my money on our defense.

I love watching sports and when I watch sports I always root for my team and if my team isn't playing I'm rooting for the underdog (unless the underdog is scum). With us playing the underdog role it makes this game even more exciting! I can't wait for Saturday.

If Swoopes can be the player he has become in practice, we will have a chance. I get and agree, that the OL may be a big problem, but the biggest thing is Swoopes and his mental state after a hit or bad play.

On defense I am worried about our youth in key areas against a QB that can take off at any time. Lose contain on him and he is off to the races.

Great write up!!
