Pay for play?

In reading all of the news related to the 2015 college football playoffs I am amazed at the incessant discussion about paying players for time spent on the field. I fully understand they are a big part of the revenue coming in but a scholarship is worth a lot of money, especially depending on which school you play at. I disagree with it and feel like wearing a Longhorn jersey on Saturday is privilige enough. Early Campbell did not get paid, neither did Ricky Williams, the list goes on and on. Paying players sucks the tradition right out of it if you ask me.

I am interested in feedback from others.

"In my opinion, with the amount of money the playoff will generate, I hope we can revisit the student-athlete stipend,"
This, according to a Tweet from Mack Brown. At one point the NCAA was entertaining a stipend in the amount of roughly 2K for players in addition to scholarships (enter the Steve Spurrier plan). It didn't get much traction because some schools could afford the stipend much more than others. If they do decide to pay players it needs to not be exorbitant and it needs to be fair.

Hell yeah those kids should get something. Just give them the full cost of attendance. That will put a little money in their pocket to help with travel and stuff like that.

As Rich Rod said the other day, which makes a lot of sense, if they can't get paid, then at least let them be fed everyday, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I like the idea of a stipend to let them spend it on what they feel they need and when it's all gone, it's gone. Not sure that would have helped the Peter Warricks and Mark Pryors of the world but at least it would show an effort on the part of the NCAA. Honestly though isn't being a student-athlete special enough?

It all boils down to what you aim to accomplish with the stipend.....

If it is a humanitarian gesture to help out really poor kids, it will work fine.

If it is an attempt to stop cheating and shady recruiting tactics, there is no way the stipends will be big enough.

I have gone back and forth on this issue for a few years. The one side says these kids get a full ride for their education and that's enough. The other side tells me that these schools make millions upon millions off these kids and they get nothing to show for it.

I think the players should be afforded some sort of cost of living stipend that is added into their scholarship that will help with eating, etc. the full scholly just doesn't cover everything that these kids need.

Yeah cheating ain't going anywhere. It should be about the players.
