Patterson

I don't believe Powers, Patterson or Mack screwed up Saban to Texas. I believe there was no Saban to Texas. Just my opinion.
It's less painful to think that. Tuesday was supposed to be the day. That is why Patterson made the comment in the press conference.

sounds like is going to have full control over the hiring process per js. powers wont be calling the shots. mack has no input. good news
I think he said he would be given parameters by the BMDs and has been told he can report directly to them.

It took me a little while but I have come to the conclusion that Patterson has had full control of the hire/fire coaching decisions from the start. He must have. Otherwise he would not have taken the position.

All of the conflicting/confusing statements from the various involved parties regarding Mack Brown since then have been spin and cover. The spin/cover has served two purposes:

(1) It acted as show of deference to Mack. Which avoided unsightly public acrimony (for the most part) and allowed him to be properly celebrated; and

(2) It also gave some cover to Patterson to avoid the appearance that he came in aiming to axe Mack. Thus Patterson has deftly avoided any lasting impression or resentment this was another Jones/Landry situation.

I cannot prove this one way or the other but it is the only view that makes sense.

Wow...interesting theory there. Not sure I believe it, though...

Going to allow Patterson to maintain his "testicles" for now. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and allow things to play out. Want to see his "brand" impact after he has been in the saddle for 9 to 12 months. This will provide a much more qualified assessment of his abilities and where he is taking us.

I think Patterson was neutered with regard to Mack.
I don't think he would have taken the job unless he had the authority to hire/fire coaches. I would not have. Would you? If he did not have that power, then he is not really the athletic director.

Powers is an academic. He doesnt even follow sports. He arrives at his office on Monday morning and has to ask someone if we won or lost. This is not someone who is going to pick a head football coach.

What does Powers care about with regard to the football program?

-Revenues (ticket/merchandise sales, TV money, ...)

-Donations

-Reputation (no cheating ....)

How does a school president handle these matters? He/she does their due diligence, hires the best AD available, then delegates those powers to the AD. This is how it works. This is one of the primary reasons the AD position exists at any university.

In this case, over time, Powers developed great admiration of Mack Brown for the way he built and ran the program. It was well-earned for the most part. They became personal friends. With regard to what happened here -- Powers and Patterson had a clear understanding from the outset that it would be Patterson's call - this is the job after all (Indeed in can be argued this was a major reason Dodds quit, so he would not have to fire Brown). Powers, for his part, was not going to let the change that was coming damage the reputation of his friend Brown. He stuck his nose into the process for this purpose - to ensure everyone knew the school loved Brown and appreciated what he had done. Powers was not going to let Brown's reputation be sullied at the last moment. This was something he could control and he did so.

OK, so, for this ^ view to be true - for what I just wrote to be correct -- then the subsequent statements from Powers/Patterson/Brown that it was all up to Mack Brown whether he was staying or leaving cannot be true. It is my position that these remarks were not true and were all aimed at protecting Brown's legacy. It is what Powers/Brown wanted and Patterson was more than willing to go along with it as it would have no bearing over his actual control of the firing/hiring process. Plus it protected Patterson from any claim he forced Mack out himself.

For proof of this, I point to the Banquet. Watch it. Or watch it again now that you know the backdrop. There you see long faces and you hear measured and parsed the remarks (from the people that mattered). Call them lawyerly remarks if you like. It appeared when watching all that, that the decision had already been made. That the Browns, both of them, knew that was their last Banquet. Indeed, they were the last 2 to leave the room. So they stayed until the bitter end then took one last forlorn look around the place that held so many great memories for them. Patterson and Powers knew too. And most of the players knew or at least had a strong suspicion. Some of us discussed this that night and the next morning prior to the announcement. Because, if you recall, the rumor running rampant was that Mack was staying. What we were discussing was that Mack staying was in stark contrast to what had just happened at the Banquet - it made no sense. Then, once the announcement was formally made, it put what occurred at the Banquet into proper context. At that point, it made sense.

reading what JS wrote made me SO MAD beyond belief. it's like saturday morning all over again, punched in the gut over and over again...
Cliffs notes on what JS said please

the fact that next to no info is leaking out right now and not even the national guys have a clue who UT is talking too right now pretty much tells me Patterson has things on lockdown...which means he's in control (which he is per JS and a few others)

Patterson has direct experience hiring coaches and extensive contacts in the agent world & college/pro sports. there is some talk there may not even be a search committee...Chip mentioned hearing that. If one is named I bet it only has 1-2 people on it with Patterson in charge

We may not know who UT is going to hire until the deal is done at this rate - I dont think we will see a search with people following planes and all kinds of info about who Patterson is talking too happening this go around

Pretty sure that Patteron's UT Amex Black card is loaded and is the checkbook. He's got skin in this game (2 UT degrees) so whoever he gets imho will be a home run hire.
