Pat Forde: How Charlie Strong flipped Texas on its head and made a two-QB system work

I started to get confused at first that he wearing number 7. This is cool.

“They surprised him with (jersey number) 7, first of all. I knew that was coming, too,†Steve Buechele said. “That was a surprise to Shane. He didn’t know that until before the game.â€

Watching son Shane was ‘incredible experience’ for Steve Buechele

What exactly is a blitzing lineman? I always thought that only linebackers and defensive backs blitzed.

College QB Lessons From Week 1

•In its first game of an up-tempo, Baylor-style offense under new coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, Texas started true freshman Shane Buechele, who handled himself incredibly well, beyond one costly interception. Buechele averaged 10.8 yards per attempt, completing 16 of 26 for 280 yards and two TDs. He also ran for 33 yards and a TD, and he put up those numbers despite the Longhorns' decision to rotate in senior Tyrone Swoopes, primarily as a runner. The combination of Buechele and Gilbert gave Texas fans optimism for the future for the first time in years, and in a wide-open Big 12, the Longhorns appear ready to get over the hump sooner rather than later. In one game, they went from identity-less and frustrating on offense to one of the most intriguing teams in the country.

Texas has the rare two-quarterback system that will work. Buechele wasn't the only quarterback to shine for the Longhorns. Gilbert and Charlie Strong successfully utilized the powerful Swoopes in his 18-wheeler package, and Swoopes rewarded them with 13 carries for 53 yards and three TDs -- including both Longhorns touchdowns in overtime to give them the win over the Fighting Irish. A true freshman relegating a senior to a complementary role won't always work; in this case, everyone -- especially Swoopes -- appears to have bought into the system and the rotation as the best bet for the team's success. It's hard to strike that balance, but for one game, at least, Texas utilized two quarterbacks as well as it could have. Stretch the field with Buechele as a passer, and change things up with the 249-pound Swoopes joining the 252-pound Chris Warren and 249-pound D'Onta Foreman in the backfield. That's going to be difficult for anyone to defend.

UTEP has to be hoping that Swoopes never sees the field tomorrow. I think they'll be sick of the Texas running backs.
