OU - Change the Gameplan?

Texas seems to play better when they're playing more up-tempo. I'd really like to see us run a majority no-huddle offense when we take the field in Dallas. Throw something at Oklahoma that they haven't seen yet. Count on your halfbacks to keep things interesting in the backfield. Heck, I'd spend the next week working a pure shotgun formation with a halfback on either side of Swoopes. Run some option, run some triple option and then run a nauseating amount of play action. Make the Oklahoma front think a little bit before committing. Chew them up with quick passes across the middle to Harris and Shipley for first downs. This Offense could achieve a lot with a nickel and dime mindset. Be an agitating nuisance on offense, regularly completing passes for 5-10 yards after exposing the gaps with the run game.
I don't expect to see any of those changes made by Saturday, especially given it would be a change in gameplan. But if we want to win this weekend, major adjustments need to be made. We can't go out and play like we did against Baylor and expect to win. If we learned anything in the game this past weekend, it's that Baylor was a beatable team. We just didn't have the poise or confidence on Offense to get it done.

The power slant to Marcus Johnson that was repeatedly effective against UCLA should be back this week. It's perfect for the way OU plays D.

You do realize that without errors like the block kick and the fumble at the goal line (as we tried to go up tempo). . .we had a great chance to beat Baylor?

What made Baylor a "winnable" game was CFS and Bedford taking Petty completely out of his game. . .sadly, they exposed our weaknesses at LB with their run game. . .

This is also Swoopes best throw, a fastball. . .straight and flat.

If you go back and watch the Baylor tape, they put in an interesting option-read twist....Swoopes (from the gun) had the option to hand it to Daje (coming across at full speed/in motion) or keep it and go off tackle (based on how the DE and LB play it). He kept it (correct read), but it went for a minimal gain, so not many have commented on it. It's a nice play and one they will likely use to stretch the Sooner D.

Completely agree.

By my saying that Baylor was a winnable game, I'm saying that Texas had a chance to beat them. I wouldn't credit the fumble at the goal line to us going up-tempo. So much as a botched play. I don't think you can use mistakes (eg. blocked kick and fumble) to make a claim that our offense played better than it did. By the 4th quarter, Baylor's Defense looked very comfortable with our offense taking the field. We already flashed a little bit of read offense earlier this season, I'm simply suggesting that we really build on it.

Any offensive strategy that doesn't require Swoopes to take a snap under center is a good idea; Shotgun, Pistol, Spread...whatever

1) clean exchange between center and QB
2) bring back the quick-kick

the BU game was winnable because the D played very well before wearing out. i don't have any problems if watson/wickline or whoever is in charge try some new wrinkles. but with our personnel limitations, i'm not sure it matters a lot.

Personally, I'd rather shorten the game than lengthen it.

Since we've seen this D will wear out and OU's run game is better than Baylor's.

I agree with you, with this personnel. . .scheme isn't the problem. . . .execution is. . .

the fumble was off a time out so it was a no tempo play.

you don't run the triple option sometimes. it takes a tremendous about of work to get the reads down.

It does take some work, no doubt about that. But when you're running the option off of a read, it's not as straight forward as a triple option and should be a bit simpler. But yes, not easy to master. Certainly not in a week.

I may get crucified here, but I think that what's killing our offense are mistakes rather than inability. We played as well as BU this weekend, IMO. Again, the fumbled snap, the ridiculous field goal attempt which led to a fluke TD, the passes that were inches off....all these seem to be correctable.

Agree that Swoopes missed a bunch of passes, usually late or behind open receivers.

Yes, it's correctable but when will the light go on for Tyrone?  He's regressed since the UCLA game.  He needs to play much sharper than this and to hear him admit that "he was nervous".  Oh, boy...

He doesn't inspire confidence in the fans, what about his teammates?

Valid concerns. Only time will tell, I suppose.
