Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones has acknowledged that he almost drafted Johnny Manziel, and that he talked about it with his son Stephen at the moment the Cowboys were turning in their card. But a new book says it was a more dramatic scene than that.

According to author Jim Dent in the new bookManziel Mania, Stephen had to physically restrain Jerry from turning in a card with Manziel’s name on it, and if it hadn’t been for Steven stepping in, Manziel would be a Cowboy.

“Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones had snatched the Manziel card straight out of his dad’s hand. Otherwise, Jerry would have drafted him and JFF would have sat for at least three years behind Tony Romo,†Dent writes, via the Dallas Morning News.

If Jerry watched Manziel’s sub-par performance on Monday night, he may be thanking his son today.

I'm pretty sure the Cowboys War Room at Valley Ranch (soon to be in Frisco 2016) was televised. . . but who knows.. . I know he was NOT in NYC. . ..  .

I think the story is being oversold. . . . .but if JJ wants him, he can trade for him after the season. . .I'm sure he'll have to give up at least a 6th rounder . ..though Cleveland might throw in a draft pick to take him off their hands. . .

Dent's name has been more or less buried in the mud by DFW folks who know him. This part of the story was big in the media up here for obvious reasons and just about everybody who knew the Cowboys draft situation (including Mickey Spagnola) claimed it was false.

Jerry Jones himself seems to confirm that he was very close to drafting Manziel.  Isn't he the Dallas GM as well?

OXNARD, Calif. — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones can’t help himself. Instead of focusing on training camp, Jones gave new life to an old story during a live segment Sunday on the NFL Network.

Jones admitted the Cowboys were close to drafting former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel with the 16th overall pick. Jones resisted and chose Notre Dame guard Zack Martin. The Cleveland Browns eventually picked Manziel with the 22nd overall choice.

“I want you to know that almost as I was handing in the card, it was that close to putting that Manziel card in. It was that close,†Jones said. “I looked over to my son, Stephen, our chief executive officer, and I said ‘I took the right pick.’ ... He was the top player by three players on our board at the time that we were sitting there looking at him.â€

Jones added: “The question was, ‘Could we make it work with Tony Romo during the period of time that we are going to have Tony?’ And by the way, my expectations are that Tony will be our quarterback several years to come as we move along.

“But Manziel is special. I know him personally. I know that he is going to be a success in the National Football League, and it was a hard decision. And it is one that I will probably have for the rest of my career think about.â€

When talking to reporters after practice, Stephen Jones declined to relive draft night. He said he preferred to focus on what the Cowboys needed to do to win this season.

I assume "turning in the card" is a figure of speech since JJ/Stephen actually make a phone call to NYC where their rep actually "turns in the card". .

They were sitting in Valley Ranch . .. .

Being close and having a card taken out of your hand are two different things. Dent attempted to sensationalize a story, likely for book sales. It wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last.

Yep.  Everyone knows Jones is not in New York for the draft.  How does everyone know this?  Because Jones has cut a deal with ESPN to show Jones every draft sitting in his "war room."  This has been going on so long I cant rmbr when it started.

This "handing in the card" stuff is a side issue IMO.  One partially created by Jones himself, through his own admissions (see video below).

Nonetheless, the larger point is that Jones liked Manziel, wanted to draft him, was going to draft him and almost did draft him.  Jones also apparently admits that the son talked him out of it although this part is also somewhat unclear and the son now refuses to discuss it further.

All of the focus on the card is an attempt to willfully ignore this larger fact that Manziel was indeed nearly a Cowboy.

The issue with the "card" was created by Jones due to his own admissions.

But there is not much doubt that Jerry liked Manziel, wanted to draft him, was going to draft him and almost did draft him.  Maybe his son prevented him from doing this, maybe he didn't.  That part is unclear.

What is clear, however, is that Manziel was almost a Cowboy.  

The card talk focus appears to be an attempt to willfully ignore this fact.

That's the only thing we're disputing. Everybody and their mother's great aunt knew that Jerry Jones was interested in Manziel. But just about every reputable Cowboy source in-the-know has voiced that Dent both bent and fabricated the truth for his story. In the end, Jones and Co. made the right choice.

If you watch the video, I think its hard to conclude Dent was fabricating anything as Jones either confirms or comes close to confirming Dent there.

Instead, the issue is Jones' and perhaps Dent's imprecise use of words.

Let me preface this by saying that I actually do like Shan and a few weeks ago, I would have been on board with what he's throwing out there. But in light of everything that happened with Peterson and his kid, I don't want to see a star on his helmet anytime soon. Not until he's made right what he did wrong. And that's not as simple as saying "I'm sorry" and "I'm not a child abuser".
