Offseason Priorities

Thanks, Matt, for a little fresh air..  When I was at 247, one of the biggest complaints was that even in season, subscribers seemed to provide at least as much content as the 247 staff.  I am not there anymore, and I am only using this comparison to illustrate that, as basketball fans on a Longhorn sports forum, we are accustomed to getting short shrift in comparison to football.  You guys are starting up and trying to make this work, for EVERYBODY!  The effort shows.  Thank you.

With regards to the commitment of Shaquille Cleare, you gotta wonder about how this affects the recruitment of Myles Turner.  Personally, I think that Turner has made it very clear, pardon the pun, that he sees himself fitting in very well with Ridley and the Prince at the five and himself, Holmes, and Lammert floating inside and outside in a hybrid three/four position with each playing to their strengths in various combinations with Barnett fitting into these rotations as a true three where he is able.  Of course that does not say anything about possible three guard combinations.  My point is, it seems to me that if Turner is the intelligent young man that I think he is, he will understand that since he, himself, is a relatively young basketball player, and it is possible that he just might need to stay in college for two years instead of one,  if this is in fact the way that things were to transpire, it just might be a good thing to have another biggum in the middle if Ridley's stock takes off next year and he goes to the League.  Lot of if's, and's, and but's there, but if a young high schooler just sees "playing time", he might want to go somewhere else.  If he wants to maximize his and his teams potential, he just might see that the potential lineups at Texas over the next couple of years would very much allow him to showcase his skills as a hybrid four/five at the next level.

With  regards to your comments about the guards.  I don't bet, but I kinda of think that Isaiah Taylor is going to do whatever it takes to maximize his abilities, jump shots and otherwise.  Who knows, maybe it does not come down to a choice between Holland and Walker.  All of our guards seem to have some intriguing talent that is so far untapped.  Maybe it comes down to a maestro like performance by our coaches to coax the best out of each of these guys,  heaven forbid even Holland could develop a jump shot, and mix and match them according to need.  I know that the first criticism of this is that there are just too many good players possible for a reasonable rotation, but remember that the indication as of now is that these guys get along with each other very well, and at present at least, nobody seems to be on the verge of leaving.  Maybe, Just maybe, they are on a mission ... maybe a mission from god!  ;)

Well thank you for being a part of Horn Sports.

We do plan on writing about basketball on top of wall to wall coverage with football. I believe basketball is an untapped market in Texas Longhorns coverage. Football drives the bus, anyone who writes for the Texas Longhorns know that. But basketball has a dedicated following that is underserved IMO.

I disagree that there should be choosing between anyone. the more contributors/depth the better, and I still hope Croaker rediscovers his shot.

Texas coach Rick Barnes said the Longhorns have had positive impressions of their newcomers.

Barnes said Turner provided offensive versatility in that he can stretch a defense or score inside, while also providing rim protection defensively. Turner hasn't worked with the coaches yet, as he's been practicing with the Team USA U-18 team.

"All that's going to help him," Barnes said.

Barnes noted that fellow freshman Jordan Barnett was "willing to listen. He's willing to work." He said that Barnett moved his feet well and had a chance to be a "terrific defensive player," and eventually a versatile threat himself.

"He's a terrific athlete," Barnes said. "He makes some things look very easy."
