New thread - old subject - SWOOPES

That's easy to say but if you go back and dissect the season, there really were no more meaningful snaps to be had. Consider Swoopes was injured and not 100% until about the ISU game. About the only game he could have received more snaps (in hindsight) was the RRR. But even then, ou scored at the beginning of the 4th (if I remember correctly) and made it close enough that a TO could have made a difference.I really don't fault the coaches for the way they handled TS last season. They didn't really have a choice.
yeah, the ' meaningful snaps' arguement sounds good in theory but in reality a meaningful snap means the game is still in doubt. if swoopes comes in and throws a pick-6 or fumbles the first snap, the coaches would get crucified. 'why is a true FR in the game now ??'

Major was a redshirt. We have no idea how he would have performed as a true FR. Sorry pal. Speaking absolutes after watching a few plays of a guy as a true FR and declaring 'he doesn't have it' is silly.
At the end of Swoopes career we can go back and visit this. For now I stand by my opinion. I have nothing against the kid. I hope I am wrong. But I stand firmly in the corner of those that believe his is a wonderful athlete in the wrong position.

I started this on TOS, but I am going to post that thread on here, verbatim, because I think it bears repeating. I know some of you are members of that site as well, but I will bore you once again.
Because of the Wittek and Heard discussions and the complete omission of Swoopes, this must be said, IMO:

I don't think that he is being overlooked by the people that matter (the coaches) and that's all that counts, imo.

I want to throw this argument into the same arena as "fans that overreact". If Mike Alligator Arms Davis had caught that long ball in the Alamo Bowl, Swoopes looks like the next coming of VY. It was a beautifully thrown ball. Our senior WR just didn't want to lay out to catch the pass.

Swoopes was the first true freshman we had play in a bowl game since GG in the '09 championship game. Mack screwed him by pulling his shirt during the season.

You also can't judge the kid by the bull$hit moves of our previous coaching staff. Let the new coaches get an honest look at this kid. I think he will be great, and I think they have every plan of redshirting Heard.

The biggest thing Swoopes needs is reps. Period. He needs to run the offense in the games, not hand the ball off. He needs what almost all of our backups needed under Mack, but never got, MEANINGFUL playing time. Hopefully the new staff will find a way to get this for him. He is a physical specimen and has the tools, he just needs some game action to fine tune things, because you're not going to get that in practice.
No backups in pro or college get meaningful reps. It's the same everywhere, and not sure why people who watch the game don't realize this. If you have two QB splitting time, you have no QB's.

HS tape means next to nothing when evaluating at D1 level. Why hasn't anyone understood this from Chiles and Chance Mock? Not sure why.

We don't see practice, we have zero idea of who's ready to play or not. The incessant bellyaching over people who should play is relentless.

I thought Mock had the ability to become a good D1 QB, his opportunity was simply taken away by an all world talent in Vince. He was 5-0 before Vince took over, and he also bailed our asses out vs. Tech that season. Given more games, while he wouldn't have been Vince, I think he would have been a good QB for the Horns. Anybody have an opinion?

Oh, I think the answer is very clear. It is also why they are trying to groom Oligalibaba as a QB as well. Number one, Wittek has not signed with UT and the jury is still out on that one. Number two, if Ash goes down, that only leaves Swoopes and a high school kid as backups. The HS kid needs the year of RS and Wittek simply improves our QB depth. Oligalibaba would be no different than Swoopes or Ash were in their freshmen years. And that is scary.
Didn't your guy Oligalibaba throw a sweet pick off an end around last year or the year before? Just wanted to cut and paste your spelling on a reply LOL.

While I agree with this, somewhat, HS tapes are very helpful for recruiting evaluations. Particularly if a coach knew nothing about the kid.

I, also, agree the backup should NOT split practice reps with the starter. However, a coach does himself and the team a disservice if he neglects his backup QB. SOME time must be allocated for backup preparation as well. If nothing else, the last four years have taught us that.

Finally, my idea of meaningful reps is in game time situations anyway. The backup MUST be allowed to get game reps every moment he can - blowouts are good examples. Look at the travesty that was laid on Swoopes. They burned his shirt and still wouldn't allow him on the field but the very minimal time. In my opinion, that was a legitimate reason to terminate a coach or coaches. Millionaires should not make these kinds of outrageous decisions because he had no capable back up prepared.
