Jimbo Fisher is said to be making up ground.

If Jimbo were to leave FSU, look for FSU to interview Kirby Smart the Bama DC.

Other scenario:

Saban to Texas

Fisher to Bama

Smart to FSU

Darrell, what do you think about Fisher specifically? I don't know why, but I'm not sold on him. It's taken him 4 years to build FSU back to a nationally title contending program, yet Malzahn built Auburn back 1 year removed from a 3 win season in 2012. Just curious.

Good point. And Malzahn is not playing with a Heisman Trophy quarterback this year.

Jimbo Fisher was the OC at LSU under Saban when LSU won the MNC.

You can look at it this way too. How many games did Auburn win in the last minute on unbelievable plays? I'm counting four games.

Would we discussing Malzahn if Auburn did not win those games?

I'm not sure which one I prefer either but, if our search comes down to these two, I won't complain.

If Malzahn had gotten Auburn to an 8-4 record after going 3-9 the prior season, I still think we are talking about him extensively. I hear you on the late game heroics, but I think DKR said something like good teams make their own luck and I find it even more compelling towards Malzahn that his first Auburn team consistently finds ways to win late as needed.

The offensive players at Auburn were mostly Malzahn's kids from his time as OC there. It's not like he is winning with a total lineup of another coach's kids. He also took a JUCO QB that had over 20 INTs last year and turned him into a machine.

Yeah, what he did with Nick Marshall this season is amazing. Weren't we talking to Marshall about safety? It just gets more and more silly to hear the positions we tried to recruit RG3, Manziel, and Marshall towards in the secondary. Mack can't stand these stories, but the only reason we're still talking about it is because of his approach. I didn't even include Winston here who's HS coach apparently called Mack 5-6 times with no answer or return call.

McPhaul - do you think a coach like John Harbaugh would be interested in UT position? Is Saban still truly interested in position once his game is thru?

Here is a post from Shannon Terry (Rivals and 247 creator) on BOL( Bama on Line).

I am not an oddsmaker, and not ready to make the call, but I would not be surprised if Jimbo Fisher or Art Briles is the next head coach at Texas. I continue to hear that both Fisher and Briles are interested, and highly placed sources tell us to expect Fisher to take a deep look at the opportunity after the BCS title game.

I do not know Texas' AD/BOR order of priority and not even sure they do at this time. However, if I was on the panel making the call I would load up the truck and do whatever it took to bring Fisher to Austin.

If Fisher does land in Austin, there's a domino effect in the college coaching community.

If Fisher leaves for Texas, Kirby Smart would most assuredly be on the FSU short list and would have a solid shot at landing the job. And before some of you ask the obvious question ... yes, Smart would run to Tallahassee, as FSU is one of the top 10-15 jobs in college football.

Which leads us to a very interesting discussion. If Fisher lands in Austin and Smart lands in Tallahassee, were does Jeremy Pruitt end up? Also, don't rule out Pruitt being offered the head job at FSU. He would also be a finalist for the job.

Obviously, Pruitt would take the head job in Tallahassee. However, for sake of debate, let's assume the job goes to Smart. Where would Pruitt land? Would he stay in Tallahassee where he has developed close ties and work for one of his best friends, Kirby Smart? Would he follow his heart to Tuscaloosa and work for his mentor, Nick Saban, or pack up for Austin with Fisher?. Sources tell us that all three would immediately offer Pruitt the DC job.

Friend, head or heart? Make no mistake that Alabama and Texas would load up the Brinx truck and make Pruitt one of the highest paid assistants in the game, making it very difficult for FSU to compete from a financial standpoint. With that said, we think Pruitt was come back to Alabama and work for Saban in a very, very close decision.

We don't normally do "what ifs," but it is certainly entertaining to think about the chain of events that would occur if Fisher lands at Texas.

I think Pruitt is one of the great young coaches, and obviously one of the elite recruiters in college football. I think Pruitt would have a very difficult decision to make. Go to Austin with Fisher or Tuscaloosa with Saban. It's not as easy of a decision as it may seem.

Logically, why would Jimbo Fisher leave FSU? He is playing for a national championship with a tradition rich university, which, he resurrected from mediocrity. If there is talk about him being interested, I would suspect it is just a ploy to receive a bump in salary from FSU.

Some of the names that I'm reading about make zero sense. I can't wait until we start talking about the "real" candidates for the job.

Fisher just got a bump in salary from FSU and UT could bump it out of FSU's range easily.

The more I looked into all the coaches that I have been mentioned, I think John Harbaugh would be the best fit at Texas. At Texas we expect the HC to fulfill so many different roles than that of any other Blue Blood programs. I see John as having the best temperament for handling our demanding needs that having nothing to do with the X's & O's.

Yes, we are still talking to Saban.

We are Coal.

I still say the hire with the biggest "wow" factor might be Bobby Petrino. His problems were related to hubris and not connected with the program. If he is a changed man, he would the the one guy who can flat out coach who has a HUGE chip on his shoulder and has reasons to win (and win big) that aren't solely connected to money. A p!ssed off Petrino wanting to open a can of "f-you" on opponents (and especially on SEC schools), settle some scores and redeem himself would be scary. He has paid for his mistakes, wouldn't be a problem hire and has shown he can win. With the article about how the FSU program is out of control with respect to academics, Petrino is no more tainted than Fisher.

He doesn't have a good relationship with either the AD or the University President there.

FSU is also strapped for cash, they're just not doing that well.

He recently got a raise to $4.1 million. We'll be opening negotiations probably about $6 million with escalators and rewards that get close to $10M with time.

I'm not racist but he has to keep a bunch of young black guys from acting like Cortez at FAMU. As I saw someone on the Longhorn interwebz (think it was Jeff Howe) describe it this way: "He has to keep his kids from Girls Gone Wild University down the street."

Those are just a couple of reasons but people often bring up the excuse of "he has Jameis again." Well ya sure he does, for one more year before he's in the NFL. And he'd be able to recruit better, and probably more easily at Texas since he won't have to battle UF (Texas) or Miami (current Baylor but with tradition) and not to mention everyone else in the SEC and plus Ohio State and Clemson. All these kids that grow up with Texas as their "dream school" could come play here knowing that they'd be playing for a young, proven winner.

His son also has an extremely rare disease that could potentially lead to cancer and what better place to be than a two hour or so drive from MD Anderson and he'd soon have his office a stone's throw from a brand-new elite medical school and hospital. If I'm the folks in charge of negotiations, I certainly don't make this a selling point but when he asks about family life or says something about his son's illness, it's an extremely easy solution.

I don't have much in the way of insider info but I'd put Fisher at the #1 spot right now. I think he's the most likely next Head Football Coach at The University of Texas.

thanks McPhaul, hornsports is a great site and your info is appreciated!

Texas is a better job than FSU on several fronts and would likely blow away what FSU would offer him to stay. it wouldnt even be close money wise. FSU is not going to go Texas high. no way. no how. Talent rich state in the biggest profile job is very attractive to someone Jimbo's age I would think

Colin Cowherd said last week the buzz is Jimbo to Texas and Smart to FSU. Thats what is going around in coaching circles
