New book blames UT for Nebraska's football struggles

One more thing. In their heyday Nebraska got around the scholorship limits by having so many "walk-ons". If a Nebraska kid could afford it, he went as a walk-on and didnt count against the limit. Always made me wonder if anyone else contributed so the kids family could afford it.

At no other school did teams have multiple All Americans that were "walk-ons"

afford it
i don't think that's how they did the walk ons.  nebbie was taking advantage of being the only major - sort of - state university and had farm co-ops all over feeding them players.  a co-op would fund a scholarship for a deserving youngster, and it was amazing how often that deserving youngster would be some strapping son of a local farm family.  nebbie essentially reserved their schollies for out-of-state kids and let their farm program supply the local talent.  it was a stinky deal but was legal.  another advantage nebbie thought the world owed it for living in such an awful place.

hard to argue with that.

what you guys don't know is that i used to have some considerable respect for nebraska and even a measure of fondness.  what i've learned about them has turned all that totally on its head.

if every one of those coneheads was to gargle tonight with drano, i guess that would be ok with me.

Nebraska had 44 schools out of 63 vote against their remaining an AAU member. 44 schools, including at least five Big 10 institutions, felt there was sufficient reason to kick Nebraska out.

Meanwhile, Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Texas A&M all supported Nebraska.

Nebraska had the full support of every Big 12 member, including Texas. Five of The Big 10 schools wanted Nebraska out.

Berdahl left UT Austin in 1997. The vote was taken in 2011.

Yet Berdahl was the reason Nebraska was kicked out. Not Nebraska, but Bob Berdahl.

Riiiiiight.

So since they had to play by the same rules as everyone else in the conference, it's Texas' fault?  Got it.

Let us keep in mind the vote on partial qualifiers occured BEFORE the conferences merged not after.

Keep in mind the vote was 11-1 . . . . .

But somehow it was TEXAS' fault the conference wanted to set some academic standards . . . .

:P

Makes the '96(#3)  '98 (#3), '99(#1), 02, 03 (#9), 06,07,09(#20) and 2010 (#6) wins all the sweeter. . . listed Neb's rankings at time of play. . . . . .cost Neb shots at the title in '96 '98 and '99 as well.

That's okay...we've got broad shoulders.  Wonder how much corn's gonna like it if UT joins up with the B1G?
Texas moving to the Big 10 is FAR more complicated than people are discussing.

The Big 10 network paid out $1 million per school last year. All of the new members have dealt with six years of less than full share payouts. The Big 10 conference even shares gate receipts, with larger schools paying to subsidize smaller schools in the conference.

The cost for UT to join the Big 10 will easily go into nine figures. That is one hell of a price to pay to join the Big 10.

It's nice being the 800 lb gorilla in the room.

If anyone thinks TEXAS joining the B1G is going to be handled the same way as Maryland or Rutgers. .  ..well, pretty goofy. . .

:P
