National Signing Day 2016 Thread

I will say that Heard was not impressive throwing the football last year. I don't know yet if that is related to ability or offensive scheme. Its very difficult to compare Buechele and our current QB's. We have to see if his HS success translates to College success. I looked back and compared Heard' s SR season and Beuchele's:

Heard 144/232 62% comp. 2,136 yards, 22 TD, 7 Int. 2,161 yards rushing, 27 TD's

Beuchele 138/213 65% comp. 2,043 yards, 19 TD, 4 Int. 643 yards rushing, 7 TD's

Too many variables to say one is better than the other at this point. I doubt either would have looked good last year. All five will have the opportunity and we will count on Coach Gilbert to find the right guy. I wouldn't tab Beuchele as the starter based on HS results and I wouldn't tab Heard as a flop based on last years results. I'm just glad we have options to create competition. I believe whoever starts will have a good season thanks to scheme, coaching, and ability.
Those aren't the correct stats for Shane senior season. Go look em up on his 247 profile. Shane is a way better passer coming outta High School than Heard was if you watch thier film. Heard played in a spread option offense that where he had 1- read & was always throwing off playaction

Of course Gilbert will have plenty of help from the experts. You certainly can't just leave those decisions to the actual coaches.
That would actually be funny if not for the fact that last year the coaching staff had an entire offseason to settle in on a starter and benched him after one game in favor of the backup.  Lets see if this version of coaching staff is better at evaluation and game planning than last years.

Funny? You thought that was meant to be funny? I'm reminded of a classic Joe Pesci line from Goodfellas.

Thank you. Max preps is for losers!

Actual Stats for both per 247

Heard 144/232, 62% Comp., 2,136 yards, 22 TD's, 7 Int's, 2,161 yards rushing, 27 TD's

Beuchele 176/241, 65% Comp., 2,498 yards, 29 TD's, 6 Int's, 817 yards rushing, 10 TD's

I know Shane is a more polished passer now than Heard and he will only get better. My point is we cant write off Heard by what we saw this past year. Heard wasn't suppose to start last year and then everything changed after the ND game and everyone was learning on the fly. Both guy's have the "physical ability" to be really good QB's. I believe Shane will be the better QB when all is said and done but next year Heard will have worked with Gilbert all spring and summer. I don't think he will be as one dimensional as he was this past year. From what's been said of Gilbert's offense its suppose to be less complicated. Watson had a system that depended on the QB's ability to recognize, check down, and then deliver. He had a "pro style" QB philosophy and they tried to incorporate it in the spread offense. Rarely do you see spread QB's succeed, especially early, in the Pro's. When Charlie made the decision to scrap the old offense and let Watson try and teach the spread we were done. We had the personnel for the spread but no one to teach it. I honestly don't think Mayfield, Boykin, Stidham, or even Murray could have been productive in last years fiasco. I've said this once already. Someone on campus right now will seem like an "overnight sensation" next season because of the new QB coach.

I've said this before: I don't think Beuchele ever sees the field, at least not here. I think Heard will be the starter for as long as he's at Texas. And Elingher will probably be the guy who succeeds him...

One more tidbit.

VY RS Freshman year 84/143 55% 1,155 yards 6 TDs 7 Ints

JH RS freshman year 92/159 58% 1,214 yards 5 TDs 5 Ints

Vince ended up being ok. I imagine some horn fans believed he couldn't throw also.

vince had an unorthodox throwing motion.  he had a cannon for an arm.  heard doesn't have the arm strength that vince or swoopes had/has.  that's one of the big differences.

Hopefully Shane sees & hears this. My guess is it will only make him work that much harder to become the starter.

Arm strength isn't the issue. He graded high on arm strength and elusiveness (8's). Accuracy and pocket presence are heards issues. The game against Cal showed me something is there he just has to put it together consistently.

I see Shane starting for a minimum of two years IF he redshirted. If he doesn't redshirt he starts all four years. The only way I'd burn his redshirt is if he wins the starting job. We can't waste a year of eligibilty as a backup

Heard can put some air under the ball. Go back and look at that pass to Burt for the long TD....Look where Heard was standing and look where Burt was as that pass landed perfectly....The ball traveled a little more than 50 yds in the air. I dont need a QB to throw it farther than that. My problem with Heard as a passer is that he doesnt seem to have the "vision" or natural instinct to be proficient. Adding to that, he has not shown a desire to spend the time in the film room to better those short comings. My hope is that more competition will cause him to try and get better. This past season he never did learn to just throw the ball away.

He also didn't seem to grasp the concept when he scrambled of sliding or stepping out of bounds after you pass the first down marker.

I'm curious. What is your source for the above statement in bold?
